What the panchangam shows
The panchangam (five limbs) describes each day by five things — tithi (lunar day), vaaram (weekday), natchathiram (the moon’s star), yogam and karanam. Tamil families check it before fixing the time for a wedding, a griha pravesam, a journey or a purchase.
| What it is | |
|---|---|
| Nalla neram | The good times of the day to begin something |
| Rahu Kalam | About an hour and a half each day, avoided for new beginnings |
| Yamagandam | Another inauspicious period of the day |
| Kuligai | A period said to repeat what is done in it — good for some things, avoided for others |
| Gowri panchangam | The day and night in eight good or bad parts each |
| Tithi | The lunar day — Valarpirai (waxing) or Theipirai (waning) |
| Natchathiram | The star the moon is in |
