What the panchangam shows

The panchangam (five limbs) describes each day by five things — tithi (lunar day), vaaram (weekday), natchathiram (the moon’s star), yogam and karanam. Tamil families check it before fixing the time for a wedding, a griha pravesam, a journey or a purchase.

What it is
Nalla neramThe good times of the day to begin something
Rahu KalamAbout an hour and a half each day, avoided for new beginnings
YamagandamAnother inauspicious period of the day
KuligaiA period said to repeat what is done in it — good for some things, avoided for others
Gowri panchangamThe day and night in eight good or bad parts each
TithiThe lunar day — Valarpirai (waxing) or Theipirai (waning)
NatchathiramThe star the moon is in

Frequently asked questions

What is nalla neram?
Nalla neram (good time) is the part of the day considered auspicious for starting something new — a journey, a purchase, a ceremony. Here it is the good periods of the Gowri panchangam (Amirdham, Uthi, Laabam, Dhanam and Sugam) during the day, leaving out any that fall in Rahu Kalam or Yamagandam.
How is Rahu Kalam worked out?
The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. Rahu Kalam is one of them, fixed by the weekday: the 8th part on Sunday, 2nd on Monday, 7th on Tuesday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 4th on Friday and 3rd on Saturday. Yamagandam and Kuligai are worked out the same way.
Why do these times differ from my printed calendar?
Many printed calendars use fixed times based on a 6 AM sunrise — for example Rahu Kalam on Monday as 7:30 to 9:00 AM. This app uses the actual sunrise and sunset for your city on that day, so the times can be several minutes different, and they change through the year.
What is Gowri panchangam?
Gowri panchangam (Gowri nalla neram) divides the day, and separately the night, into eight equal parts, each named Amirdham, Uthi, Rogam, Laabam, Dhanam, Sugam, Soram or Visham. Five are good and three — Rogam, Soram and Visham — are to be avoided. The order depends on the weekday.
What is chandrashtamam?
Chandrashtamam is the period when the moon passes through the 8th rasi counted from your own birth rasi — about two and a quarter days every month, considered unfavourable for new beginnings. The panchangam shows which rasi has chandrashtamam today.
Which ayanamsa is used?
The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which most Tamil almanacs use. The positions of the sun and moon are calculated astronomically, so tithi and star end times agree with leading almanacs to within a minute or two.
Is my location sent anywhere?
No. You choose a city from the list; everything is worked out in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. The city you choose is remembered on this device only.
