How the calculator works

Everything follows from the numbers you enter — the calculator makes no assumptions of its own.

  1. Expenses at retirement. Today’s monthly expenses grow by inflation every year until you retire: monthly expenses at retirement = today’s expenses × (1 + inflation)years to retire.
  2. Amount needed when you retire. In retirement, each year’s expenses are taken out at the start of the year and keep rising with inflation, while the rest of the money earns your after-retirement return. The amount needed is exactly what lasts the number of years you chose — the chart shows it running down to zero in the final year.
  3. Monthly investment. If you add savings you already have, they grow at your before-retirement return. The calculator then works out the fixed amount to invest every month until you retire to cover the rest.

A worked example

Take a family in Chennai that spends ₹50,000 a month today:

Your numbers
Monthly expenses today₹50,000
Inflation6% a year
Years until retirement25
Years in retirement25
Return after retiring7% a year

Expenses rise to about ₹2,14,594 a month by retirement, and the amount needed on that day is about ₹5.76 crore. Investing about ₹46,374 a month for 25 years at 10% a year would build it.

Small changes matter: a year or two more of work, or a lower inflation figure, can change the answer by crores. Try a few values to see the range.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to retire in India?
It depends on four numbers: what you spend today, how fast prices rise (inflation), how many years until you retire, and how many years the money must last. For example, a Chennai family spending ₹50,000 a month today, with 6% inflation, 25 years to retirement and 25 years in retirement at a 7% return, would need about ₹5.76 crore on the day they retire. Change any of the numbers above to see your own figure.
Why does the amount look so large?
Because of inflation. At 6% a year, prices double roughly every 12 years — ₹50,000 of expenses today becomes about ₹2.15 lakh a month in 25 years. The money has to pay that, and keep pace as it keeps rising through retirement.
What inflation rate should I enter?
The calculator uses whatever you enter. India’s consumer price inflation has mostly been between 4% and 7% a year over the last decade; many people try a few values to see how much the answer moves.
What does “return after retiring” mean?
The yearly return on the money you have saved while you are drawing on it in retirement. If it equals inflation, the amount needed is simply your first year’s expenses multiplied by the number of years.
Does this include EPF, PPF or NPS?
Add whatever you have already saved for retirement — EPF, PPF, NPS, mutual funds, deposits — under “savings you already have”, with the return you expect on it. The calculator then shows how much is still to save.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to a server. The numbers are kept only in the page address, so you can bookmark or share a result.
