செத்தான் செயக்கிடந்தது இல்.

Vaiththaanvaai Saandra Perumporul Aqdhunnaan
Seththaan Seyakkitandhadhu Il

Meaning
Someone who piles up enough wealth to fill his house yet never uses it himself is as good as dead; that hoard achieves nothing at all.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
He who does not enjoy the immense riches he has heaped up in his house, is (to be reckoned as) dead, (for) there is nothing achieved (by him).
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Kural 1002

பொருளானாம் எல்லாமென்று ஈயாது இவறும்
மருளானாம் மாணாப் பிறப்பு

Porulaanaam Ellaamendru Eeyaadhu Ivarum
Marulaanaam Maanaap Pirappu

Meaning
Believing that money is everything while clinging to it and giving nothing away is a delusion, and that delusion leads to a degraded birth.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
He who knows that wealth yields every pleasure and yet is so blind as to lead miserly life will be born a demon.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who giving nought, opines from wealth all blessing springs, Degraded birth that doting miser's folly brings.

Kural 1003

Eettam Ivari Isaiventaa Aatavar
Thotram Nilakkup Porai

Meaning
Men who greedily cling to what they amass and care nothing for earning a good name are simply a burden on the earth.
Explanation in Tamil
செல்வத்தைச் சேர்ப்பதிலேயே பேராசை கொண்டு, அதைக் கொடுத்துப் புகழ் பெறுவதை விரும்பாத மனிதர்கள் இவ்வுலகில் பிறந்திருப்பதே நிலத்துக்குச் சுமையாகும். அவர்களால் யாருக்கும் நன்மை இல்லாததால், நிலம் அவர்களை வீணாகத் தாங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பது கருத்து.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
A burden to the earth are men bent on the acquisition of riches and not (true) fame.

Meaning
A person whom nobody loves or wants around: what does he imagine he will leave behind when he is gone?

Explanation in Tamil
பிறருக்குக் கொடுப்பதும் இல்லை, தாமே பயன்படுத்தி மகிழ்வதும் இல்லை என்று வாழ்பவர்களிடம் கோடிக்கணக்கில் செல்வம் அடுக்கி வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தாலும், அவர்கள் ஒன்றும் இல்லாதவர்களே. பயன்படாத செல்வம் இருப்பதும் இல்லாததும் ஒன்றுதான் என்பதே இதன் கருத்து.

Meaning
For someone who neither enjoys his riches nor is inclined to give anything to deserving people, that great wealth is only a source of harm.

Explanation in Tamil
வறுமையில் வாடுவோருக்கு எதுவும் செய்யாதவனின் செல்வம், மிகுந்த அழகுடைய ஒரு பெண் மணம் செய்துகொள்ளாமல் தனியாகவே முதுமை அடைவதைப் போன்றது. அந்த அழகு யாருக்கும் பயன்படாமல் வீணாவது போல, அவனுடைய செல்வமும் யாருக்கும் உதவாமல் வீணாகிப் போகிறது.

Explanation in Tamil
ஊரார் யாராலும் விரும்பப்படாதவனிடம் உள்ள செல்வம், ஊரின் நடுவே ஒரு நச்சு மரம் நிறையப் பழுத்திருப்பதைப் போன்றது. பழங்கள் எல்லார் கண்முன்னும் இருந்தாலும் யாரும் உண்ண முடியாது; அதுபோல அவன் செல்வம் அருகிலேயே இருந்தும் யாருக்கும் பயன் தருவதில்லை.
Classic translations
