உழந்தும் உழவே தலை.

Suzhandrumerp Pinnadhu Ulakam Adhanaal
Uzhandhum Uzhave Thalai

Meaning
People may roam from one trade to another, yet the whole world still depends on the plough. So farming, hard as it is, remains the foremost of all occupations.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Agriculture, though laborious, is the most excellent (form of labour); for people, though they go about (in search of various employments), have at last to resort to the farmer.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Howe'er they roam, the world must follow still the plougher's team; Though toilsome, culture of the ground as noblest toil esteem.

Kural 1032

எழுவாரை எல்லாம் பொறுத்து.

Uzhuvaar Ulakaththaarkku Aaniaq Thaatraadhu

Meaning
Farmers are the linchpin that holds the world together, because they feed and support all those who cannot farm and instead take up other kinds of work.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Agriculturists are (as it were) the linch-pin of the world for they support all other workers who cannot till the soil.

Uzhudhuntu Vaazhvaare Vaazhvaarmar Rellaam
Thozhudhuntu Pinsel Pavar

Meaning
Only those who plough and eat what they grow truly live on their own terms; everyone else has to bow before them and follow behind them for their food.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
They alone live who live by agriculture; all others lead a cringing, dependent life.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Alakutai Neezha Lavar

Meaning
Farmers whose fields lie shaded by heavy ears of grain will see many other kingdoms come under the rule of their own king, for a land rich in harvest grows strong.

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those whose nature is to live by manual labour will never beg but give something to those who beg.

Meaning
If ploughed soil is left to dry until a measure of earth shrinks to a quarter of its weight, the crop will grow abundantly without even a handful of manure.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If the land is dried so as to reduce one ounce of earth to a quarter, it will grow plentifully even without a handful of manure.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Reduce your soil to that dry state, When ounce is quarter-ounce's weight; Without one handful of manure, Abundant crops you thus secure.

Erinum Nandraal Eruvitudhal Kattapin
Neerinum Nandradhan Kaappu

Meaning
Adding manure does more good than ploughing, and once the weeds are cleared, guarding the crop matters even more than watering it.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Manuring is better than ploughing; after weeding, watching is better than watering (it).
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If the owner does not (personally) attend to his cultivation, his land will behave like an angry wife and yield him no pleasure.
