Kural 1041

இன்மையின் இன்னாதது யாதெனின் இன்மையின்
இன்மையே இன்னா தது.

Inmaiyin Innaadhadhu Yaadhenin Inmaiyin
Inmaiye Innaa Thadhu

Meaning
If you ask what hurts more than poverty, the only answer is poverty itself. Nothing else compares with the pain of having nothing.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
There is nothing that afflicts (one) like poverty.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
You ask what sharper pain than poverty is known; Nothing pains more than poverty, save poverty alone.

Kural 1042

இன்மை எனவொரு பாவி மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்றி வரும்.

Inmai Enavoru Paavi Marumaiyum
Immaiyum Indri Varum

Meaning
Poverty is like a wicked villain: when it arrives, it robs a person of the joys of this life and of the good that awaits in the next.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
When cruel poverty comes on, it deprives one of both the present and future (bliss).

Kural 1043

தொல்வரவும் தோலும் கெடுக்கும் தொகையாக
நல்குரவு என்னும் நசை.

Tholvaravum Tholum Ketukkum Thokaiyaaka
Nalkuravu Ennum Nasai

Meaning
The craving that poverty breeds destroys, all at once, the honour of one's long family heritage and one's personal dignity.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Hankering poverty destroys at once the greatness of (one's) ancient descent and (the dignity of one's) speech.

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)

Explanation in Tamil
ஒருவன் நெருப்பின் நடுவே இருந்தாலும் எப்படியோ தூங்கிவிட முடியும்; ஆனால் வறுமையின் நடுவே இருக்கும்போது எந்த வகையிலும் கண்மூடித் தூங்க முடியாது. ‘கண்பாடு’ என்பது தூக்கம். நெருப்பைவிட வறுமை தரும் கவலை கொடியது என்பது கருத்து.
