Kural 1051

இரக்க இரத்தக்கார்க் காணின் கரப்பின்
அவர்பழி தம்பழி அன்று.

Irakka Iraththakkaark Kaanin Karappin
Avarpazhi Thampazhi Andru

Meaning
When you find people who are fit to be asked, you may ask them for help. If they hide what they have and refuse, the blame is theirs, not yours.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If you meet with those that may be begged of, you may beg; (but) if they withhold (their gift) it is their blame and not yours.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
When those you find from whom 'tis meet to ask,- for aid apply; Theirs is the sin, not yours, if they the gift deny.

Kural 1052

இன்பம் ஒருவற்கு இரத்தல் இரந்தவை
துன்பம் உறாஅ வரின்.

Inpam Oruvarku Iraththal Irandhavai
Thunpam Uraaa Varin

Meaning
Even asking for help can be a pleasure, if what one asks for is received without any hurt or humiliation.
Explanation in Tamil
இரத்தல் என்பது பிறரிடம் கேட்டுப் பெறுதல். கேட்ட பொருள், கேட்பவர் இழிவோ மனவருத்தமோ அடையாமல் எளிதாகக் கிடைக்குமானால், அப்படிக் கேட்பதும் ஒருவனுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி தருவதாகவே அமையும். கொடுப்பவர் இன்முகத்துடன் தந்தால், கேட்டவரின் மனம் நோவதில்லை.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Even begging may be pleasant, if what is begged for is obtained without grief (to him that begs).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Even to ask an alms may pleasure give, If what you ask without annoyance you receive.

Kural 1053

கரப்பிலா நெஞ்சின் கடனறிவார் முன்நின்று
இரப்புமோ ரேஎர் உடைத்து.

Karappilaa Nenjin Katanarivaar Munnindru
Irappumo Reer Utaiththu

Meaning
There is a certain grace even in standing and asking before those whose hearts hide nothing and who understand their duty to give.
Explanation in Tamil
எதையும் மறைக்காத நெஞ்சம் உடையவர்கள், தேவை உள்ளவருக்குக் கொடுப்பது தம் கடமை என்று உணர்ந்தவர்கள். அவர்களின் முன்னால் நின்று கேட்பதும் ஒருவகை அழகு உடையதே என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். இங்கே "ஏஎர்" என்பது அழகு அல்லது சிறப்பு. நல்லவர்களிடம் கேட்பது இழிவாகாது.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
There is even a beauty in standing before and begging of those who are liberal in their gifts and understand their duty (to beggars).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The men who nought deny, but know what's due, before their face To stand as suppliants affords especial grace.

Kural 1054

இரத்தலும் ஈதலே போலும் கரத்தல்
கனவிலும் தேற்றாதார் மாட்டு.

Iraththalum Eedhale Polum Karaththal
Kanavilum Thetraadhaar Maattu

Meaning
Asking from those who would never think of holding back, even in their dreams, is as honourable as giving itself.
Explanation in Tamil
"கரத்தல்" என்பது தம்மிடம் உள்ளதை மறைத்தல்; "தேற்றாதார்" என்பது அறியாதவர். கனவில் கூட மறைத்து மறுக்க எண்ணாத வள்ளல்களிடம் சென்று கேட்பது, கொடுப்பதைப் போலவே பெருமை உடையது. அங்கே கேட்பவருக்குச் சிறுமை எதுவும் இல்லை.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To beg of such as never think of withholding (their charity) even in their dreams, is in fact the same as giving (it oneself);.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Like giving alms, may even asking pleasant seem, From men who of denial never even dream.

Kural 1055

கரப்பிலார் வையகத்து உண்மையால் கண்ணின்று
இரப்பவர் மேற்கொள் வது.

Karappilaar Vaiyakaththu Unmaiyaal Kannindru
Irappavar Merkol Vadhu

Meaning
It is because there are people in the world who never refuse that some in need simply come and stand before them, trusting they will be understood.
Explanation in Tamil
மறைக்காமல் மறுக்காமல் கொடுப்பவர்கள் இவ்வுலகில் இருக்கிறார்கள். அதனால்தான் சிலர் வாய் திறந்து கேட்காமல், கொடுப்பவரின் கண் முன் வந்து நின்றாலே போதும் என்று அந்த வழியை மேற்கொள்கின்றனர். குறிப்பறிந்து உதவுபவர் இருப்பதே அந்த நம்பிக்கைக்குக் காரணம்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
As there are in the world those that give without refusing, there are (also) those that prefer to beg by simply standing before them.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Because on earth the men exist, who never say them nay, Men bear to stand before their eyes for help to pray.

Kural 1056

கரப்பிடும்பை யில்லாரைக் காணின் நிரப்பிடும்பை
எல்லாம் ஒருங்கு கெடும்.

Karappitumpai Yillaaraik Kaanin Nirappitumpai
Ellaam Orungu Ketum

Meaning
When the needy meet people free from the fault of refusing, all the sufferings of poverty vanish at once.
Explanation in Tamil
மறுத்தல் என்ற குறை இல்லாதவரைக் கண்டால், வறுமையால் வரும் துன்பங்கள் எல்லாம் ஒரே நேரத்தில் நீங்கிவிடும். இங்கே "நிரப்பு" என்பது வறுமை, "இடும்பை" என்பது துன்பம். தாராளமாகக் கொடுக்கும் ஒருவரைச் சந்திப்பதே ஏழையின் துயரைத் தீர்க்கும்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
All the evil of begging will be removed at the sight of those who are far from the evil of refusing.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Beggars rejoice exceedingly when they behold those who bestow (their alms) with kindness and courtesy.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If men are found who give and no harsh words of scorn employ, The minds of askers, through and through, will thrill with joy.

Kural 1058

இரப்பாரை இல்லாயின் ஈர்ங்கண்மா ஞாலம்
மரப்பாவை சென்றுவந் தற்று.

Irappaarai Illaayin Eernganmaa Gnaalam
Marappaavai Sendruvan Thatru

Meaning
If there were no one to ask for help, life in this cool, vast world would be like wooden puppets moving to and fro, lifeless and without meaning.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If there were no beggars, (the actions done in) the cool wide world would only resemble the movement of a puppet.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If askers cease, the mighty earth, where cooling fountains flow, Will be a stage where wooden puppets come and go.

Kural 1059

மேவார் இலாஅக் கடை.

Eevaarkan Ennuntaam Thotram Irandhukol
Mevaar Ilaaak Katai

Meaning
What fame could givers ever have if there were no one willing to ask and receive?
Explanation in Tamil
கேட்டுப் பெற விரும்புவோர் இல்லாவிட்டால், கொடுப்பவர்களுக்குப் புகழ் எப்படி உண்டாகும்? கொடையாளரின் பெருமை வெளிப்படுவதற்குக் கேட்பவர்கள் இருப்பதே காரணம். ஆகவே கொடுப்பவரும் பெறுபவரும் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் சார்ந்தே இருக்கின்றனர்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
What (praise) would there be to givers (of alms) if there were no beggars to ask for and reveive (them).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
What glory will there be to men of generous soul, When none are found to love the askers' role.

Kural 1060

இரப்பான் வெகுளாமை வேண்டும் நிரப்பிடும்பை
தானேயும் சாலும் கரி.

Irappaan Vekulaamai Ventum Nirappitumpai
Thaaneyum Saalum Kari

Meaning
One who asks should not grow angry when refused; his own suffering from want is proof enough that others too may be unable to give.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
He who begs ought not to be angry (at a refusal); for even the misery of (his own) poverty should be a sufficient reason (for so doing).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Askers refused from wrath must stand aloof; The plague of poverty itself is ample proof.
