Kural 1151

செல்லாமை உண்டேல் எனக்குரை மற்றுநின்
வல்வரவு வாழ்வார்க் குரை.

Sellaamai Untel Enakkurai Matrunin
Valvaravu Vaazhvaark Kurai

Meaning
If you are not going away, tell me so. But your promise of a quick return, save that for those who will still be alive when you come back.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If it is not departure, tell me; but if it is your speedy return, tell it to those who would be alive then.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If you will say, 'I leave thee not,' then tell me so; Of quick return tell those that can survive this woe.

Kural 1152

இன்கண் உடைத்தவர் பார்வல் பிரிவஞ்சும்
புன்கண் உடைத்தால் புணர்வு.

Inkan Utaiththavar Paarval Pirivanjum
Punkan Utaiththaal Punarvu

Meaning
Once, just his glance was a joy to me. Now even being in his arms is painful, because I am afraid he is going to leave.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
His very look was once pleasing; but (now) even intercourse is painful through fear of separation.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
It once was perfect joy to look upon his face; But now the fear of parting saddens each embrace.

Kural 1153

அரிதரோ தேற்றம் அறிவுடையார் கண்ணும்
பிரிவோ ரிடத்துண்மை யான்.

Aridharo Thetram Arivutaiyaar Kannum
Pirivo Ritaththunmai Yaan

Meaning
Since even one who understands everything still goes away at times, it is hard to feel truly sure of anyone's word.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
As even the lover who understands (everything) may at times depart, confidence is hardly possible.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
To trust henceforth is hard, if ever he depart, E'en he, who knows his promise and my breaking heart.

Kural 1154

அளித்தஞ்சல் என்றவர் நீப்பின் தெளித்தசொல்
தேறியார்க்கு உண்டோ தவறு.

Aliththanjal Endravar Neeppin Theliththasol
Theriyaarkku Unto Thavaru

Meaning
He showed me love and told me, 'Do not be afraid.' If he now leaves me, can the one who trusted his reassuring words be blamed?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If he who bestowed his love and said "fear not" should depart, will it be the fault of those who believed in (his) assuring words ?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If he depart, who fondly said, ' Fear not,' what blame's incurred By those who trusted to his reassuring word.

Kural 1155

ஓம்பின் அமைந்தார் பிரிவோம்பல் மற்றவர்
நீங்கின் அரிதால் புணர்வு.

Ompin Amaindhaar Pirivompal Matravar
Neengin Aridhaal Punarvu

Meaning
She tells her friend: if you want to save me, stop the man who is mine from leaving. Once he goes, being together with him again will be hard to come by.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If you would save (my life), delay the departure of my destined (husband); for if he departs, intercourse will become impossible.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If you would guard my life, from going him restrain Who fills my life! If he depart, hardly we meet again.

Kural 1156

பிரிவுரைக்கும் வன்கண்ணர் ஆயின் அரிதவர்
நல்குவர் என்னும் நசை.

Pirivuraikkum Vankannar Aayin Aridhavar
Nalkuvar Ennum Nasai

Meaning
If he is hard-hearted enough to tell me to my face that he is leaving, then any hope that he will be kind to me again is hard to hold on to.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Is hard, when he could stand, and of departure speak to me.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
To cherish longing hope that he should ever gracious be, Is hard, when he could stand, and of departure speak to me.

Kural 1157

துறைவன் துறந்தமை தூற்றாகொல் முன்கை
இறைஇறவா நின்ற வளை.

Thuraivan Thurandhamai Thootraakol Munkai
Iraiiravaa Nindra Valai

Meaning
Are not the bangles slipping down off my wrists announcing to everyone that the lord of the seashore has left me?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Do not the rings that begin to slide down my fingers forebode the separation of my lord ?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The bracelet slipping from my wrist announced before Departure of the Prince that rules the ocean shore.

Kural 1158

இன்னாது இனன்இல்ஊர் வாழ்தல் அதனினும்
இன்னாது இனியார்ப் பிரிவு.

Innaadhu Inaniloor Vaazhdhal Adhaninum
Innaadhu Iniyaarp Pirivu

Meaning
Living in a town where you have no one of your own is hard; being parted from the one you love is harder still.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Painful is it to live in a friendless town; but far more painful is it to part from one's lover.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' Tis sad to sojourn in the town where no kind kinsmen dwell;' Tis sadder still to bid a friend beloved farewell.

Kural 1159

விடிற்சுடல் ஆற்றுமோ தீ.

Thotirsutin Alladhu Kaamanoi Pola
Vitirsutal Aatrumo Thee

Meaning
Fire burns only when you touch it. Can fire, like the pain of love, burn you even after you move away from it?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Fire burns when touched; but, like the sickness of love, can it also burn when removed ?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Fire burns the hands that touch; but smart of love Will burn in hearts that far away remove.

Pinirundhu Vaazhvaar Palar

Meaning
Many, it seems, manage to bear the unbearable, push away their anguish, endure separation and still go on living afterwards; the speaker implies that she herself cannot.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
As if there were many indeed that can consent to the impossible, kill their pain, endure separation and yet continue to live afterwards.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
