Kural 111

தகுதி எனவொன்று நன்றே பகுதியால்
பாற்பட்டு ஒழுகப் பெறின்.

Thakudhi Enavondru Nandre Pakudhiyaal
Paarpattu Ozhukap Perin

Meaning
Fairness is a truly good thing when a person deals with every group of people, whether friends, strangers or enemies, giving each their proper due without leaning to any side.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
That equity which consists in acting with equal regard to each of (the three) divisions of men [enemies, strangers and friends] is a pre-eminent virtue.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If justice, failing not, its quality maintain, Giving to each his due, -'tis man's one highest gain.

Kural 112

செப்பம் உடையவன் ஆக்கஞ் சிதைவின்றி
எச்சத்திற் கேமாப்பு உடைத்து.

Seppam Utaiyavan Aakkanj Chidhaivindri
Echchaththir Kemaappu Utaiththu

Meaning
The wealth of a fair and upright person does not waste away. It lasts, and it becomes a safeguard for their descendants as well.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The wealth of the man of rectitude will not perish, but will bring happiness also to his posterity.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The just man's wealth unwasting shall endure, And to his race a lasting joy ensure.

Kural 113

நன்றே தரினும் நடுவிகந்தாம் ஆக்கத்தை
அன்றே யொழிய விடல்.

Nandre Tharinum Natuvikandhaam Aakkaththai
Andre Yozhiya Vital

Meaning
Even if it seems to bring nothing but good, any gain that comes from abandoning fairness should be given up that very day, not held on to.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Forsake in the very moment (of acquisition) that gain which, though it should bring advantage, is without equity.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though only good it seem to give, yet gain By wrong acquired, not e'en one day retain.

Kural 114

தக்கார் தகவிலர் என்பது அவரவர்
எச்சத்தாற் காணப்ப படும்.

Thakkaar Thakavilar Enpadhu Avaravar
Echchaththaar Kaanap Patum

Meaning
Whether a person was fair-minded or not is revealed by what they leave behind them: their descendants and the name that survives them.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The worthy and unworthy may be known by the existence or otherwise of good offsprings.

கோடாமை சான்றோர்க் கணி.

Ketum Perukkamum Illalla Nenjaththuk
Kotaamai Saandrork Kani

Meaning
Loss and gain are bound to come in anyone's life. Keeping one's mind from swerving away from fairness through both is the true ornament of the noble.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Loss and gain come not without cause; it is the ornament of the wise to preserve evenness of mind (under both).

Meaning
When a person's heart leaves fairness behind and turns to wrongdoing, they should take it as a clear sign: "I am heading for ruin."
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let him whose mind departing from equity commits sin well consider thus within himself, "I shall perish.".

Meaning
When someone who holds firmly to fairness and goodness falls on hard times, the world does not regard that decline as real ruin.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The great will not regard as poverty the low estate of that man who dwells in the virtue of equity.

Samanseydhu Seerdhookkung Kolpol Amaindhorupaal
Kotaamai Saandrork Kani

Meaning
Like a balance that first sets itself level and then weighs exactly, the wise are adorned by staying even and never tilting towards one side.

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
