Paal: Virtue (Araththuppaal) Iyal: Domestic Virtue Chapter 16: Poraiyutaimai

The Possession of Patience, Forbearance (Poraiyutaimai, பொறையுடைமை) is chapter 16 of the Thirukkural, in the Domestic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 151 to 160.

Kural 151

அகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் நிலம்போலத் தம்மை
இகழ்வார்ப் பொறுத்தல் தலை.

Akazhvaaraith Thaangum Nilampolath Thammai
Ikazhvaarp Poruththal Thalai

Meaning
Just as the earth holds up even those who dig into it, bearing patiently with people who insult us is the highest virtue.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To bear with those who revile us, just as the earth bears up those who dig it, is the first of virtues.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
As earth bears up the men who delve into her breast, To bear with scornful men of virtues is the best.

Kural 152

பொறுத்தல் இறப்பினை என்றும் அதனை
மறத்தல் அதனினும் நன்று.

Poruththal Irappinai Endrum Adhanai
Maraththal Adhaninum Nandru

Meaning
Always bear with the wrongs others do to you; better still is to forget them altogether.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Bear with reproach even when you can retaliate; but to forget it will be still better than that.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Forgiving trespasses is good always; Forgetting them hath even higher praise;.

Kural 153

இன்மையுள் இன்மை விருந்தொரால் வன்மையுள்
வன்மை மடவார்ப் பொறை.

Inmaiyul Inmai Virundhoraal Vanmaiyul
Vanmai Matavaarp Porai

Meaning
The worst kind of poverty is turning away a guest; the greatest kind of strength is putting up with the foolish.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To neglect hospitality is poverty of poverty To bear with the ignorant is might of might.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The sorest poverty is bidding guest unfed depart; The mightiest might to bear with men of foolish heart.

Kural 154

நிறையுடைமை நீங்காமை வேண்டின் பொற்யுடைமை
போற்றி யொழுகப் படும்.

Niraiyutaimai Neengaamai Ventin Poraiyutaimai
Potri Yozhukap Patum

Meaning
If you want your fullness of good character never to leave you, you must cherish patience and live by it.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If you desire that greatness should never leave, you preserve in your conduct the exercise of patience.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Seek'st thou honour never tarnished to retain; So must thou patience, guarding evermore, maintain.

Kural 155

ஒறுத்தாரை ஒன்றாக வையாரே வைப்பர்
பொறுத்தாரைப் பொன்போற் பொதிந்து.

Oruththaarai Ondraaka Vaiyaare Vaippar
Poruththaaraip Ponpor Podhindhu

Meaning
The wise do not value at all those who strike back, but they treasure those who forbear, the way one wraps up and keeps gold.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
(The wise) will not at all esteem the resentful They will esteem the patient just as the gold which they lay up with care.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who wreak their wrath as worthless are despised; Who patiently forbear as gold are prized.

Kural 156

ஒறுத்தார்க்கு ஒருநாளை இன்பம் பொறுத்தார்க்குப்
பொன்றுந் துணையும் புகழ்.

Oruththaarkku Orunaalai Inpam Poruththaarkkup
Pondrun Thunaiyum Pukazh

Meaning
Those who take revenge enjoy it for a single day; those who forbear earn praise that lasts until the world itself comes to an end.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The pleasure of the resentful continues for a day The praise of the patient will continue until (the final destruction of) the world.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who wreak their wrath have pleasure for a day; Who bear have praise till earth shall pass away.

Kural 157

திறனல்ல தற்பிறர் செய்யினும் நோநொந்து
அறனல்ல செய்யாமை நன்று.

Thiranalla Tharpirar Seyyinum Nonondhu
Aranalla Seyyaamai Nandru

Meaning
Even when others wrong you unjustly, it is good to feel sorry for the suffering their deeds will bring them and not to do anything unrighteous in return.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Though others inflict injuries on you, yet compassionating the evil (that will come upon them) it will be well not to do them anything contrary to virtue.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though others work thee ill, thus shalt thou blessing reap; Grieve for their sin, thyself from vicious action keep.

Kural 158

மிகுதியான் மிக்கவை செய்தாரைத் தாந்தம்
தகுதியான் வென்று விடல்.

Mikudhiyaan Mikkavai Seydhaaraith Thaandham
Thakudhiyaan Vendru Vital

Meaning
When people in their arrogance wrong you beyond all measure, overcome them through your own patient worth.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let a man by patience overcome those who through pride commit excesses.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
With overweening pride when men with injuries assail, By thine own righteous dealing shalt thou mightily prevail.

Kural 159

துறந்தாரின் தூய்மை உடையர் இறந்தார்வாய்
இன்னாச்சொல் நோற்கிற் பவர்.

Thurandhaarin Thooimai Utaiyar Irandhaarvaai
Innaachchol Norkir Pavar

Meaning
Those who endure the harsh words of people who overstep all bounds are as pure as those who have renounced the world.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those who bear with the uncourteous speech of the insolent are as pure as the ascetics.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
They who transgressors' evil words endure With patience, are as stern ascetics pure.

Kural 160

உண்ணாது நோற்பார் பெரியர் பிறர்சொல்லும்
இன்னாச்சொல் நோற்பாரின் பின்.

Unnaadhu Norpaar Periyar Pirarsollum
Innaachchol Norpaarin Pin

Meaning
Those who fast and endure hunger are great, but they rank only after those who endure the cruel words of others.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those who endure abstinence from food are great, next to those who endure the uncourteous speech of others.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though 'great' we deem the men that fast and suffer pain, Who others' bitter words endure, the foremost place obtain.
