Kural 171

நடுவின்றி நன்பொருள் வெஃகின் குடிபொன்றிக்
குற்றமும் ஆங்கே தரும்.

Natuvindri Nanporul Veqkin Kutipondrik
Kutramum Aange Tharum

Meaning
If someone gives up fairness and covets the good wealth that belongs to others, his family is brought to ruin, and guilt falls on him at that very moment.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If a man departing from equity covet the property (of others), at that very time will his family be destroyed and guilt be incurred.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
With soul unjust to covet others' well-earned store, Brings ruin to the home, to evil opes the door.

Kural 172

Meaning
People who feel ashamed of being unfair will not do anything disgraceful just because they want the profit it might bring.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those who blush at the want of equity will not commit disgraceful acts through desire of the profit that may be gained.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Kural 173

சிற்றின்பம் வெஃகி அறனல்ல செய்யாரே
மற்றின்பம் வேண்டு பவர்.

Sitrinpam Veqki Aranalla Seyyaare
Matrinpam Ventu Pavar

Meaning
Those who seek a higher, lasting happiness will not do wrong out of desire for some small, passing pleasure.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those who desire the higher pleasures (of heaven) will not act unjustly through desire of the trifling joy. (in this life.).

Ilamendru Veqkudhal Seyyaar Pulamvendra
Punmaiyil Kaatchi Yavar

Meaning
Those who have mastered their senses and see clearly, free of anything base, will not covet what others have, even when they think, "We have nothing."
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The wise who have conquered their senses and are free from crime, will not covet (the things of others), with the thought "we are destitute.".

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
What is the advantage of extensive and accurate knowledge if a man through covetousness act senselessly towards all ?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

பொல்லாத சூழக் கெடும்.

Arulveqki Aatrinkan Nindraan Porulveqkip
Pollaadha Soozhak Ketum

Meaning
Even someone who walks the right path seeking kindness will be ruined if he starts coveting others' wealth and plotting wicked ways to get it.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)

Ventarka Veqkiyaam Aakkam Vilaivayin
Maantar Karidhaam Payan

Meaning
Do not seek prosperity that comes from coveting others' things; when it finally bears fruit, that fruit is rarely anything good.
Explanation in Tamil
பிறர் பொருளைக் கவர்வதால் வரும் செல்வத்தை விரும்பாதீர்கள். மாண்டல் என்பது சிறப்படைதல். அத்தகைய செல்வம் பலன் தரும் காலத்தில், அந்தப் பலன் சிறப்பாக அமைவது அரிது; துன்பமும் பழியுமே மிஞ்சும். குறுக்கு வழியில் சேர்த்த பணம் இறுதியில் மன நிம்மதியைத் தருவதில்லை.

Ventum Pirankaip Porul

Meaning
If you ask what keeps one's wealth from dwindling, the answer is this: not wanting the property that is in another person's hands.
Explanation in Tamil
அஃகாமை என்பது குறையாமல் இருத்தல். ஒருவருடைய செல்வம் குறைந்துபோகாமல் நிலைத்திருக்க வழி என்ன என்று கேட்டால், பிறர் கையில் உள்ள பொருளை விரும்பாமல் இருப்பதே அந்த வழி. தன்னிடம் உள்ளதைக் கொண்டு நிறைவடைபவருடைய செல்வம் நிலைத்து நிற்கும்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If it is weighed, "what is the indestructibility of wealth," it is freedom from covetousness.

Meaning
Prosperity, finding its own way, comes to the wise who understand that it is right not to covet and so keep from desiring others' goods.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Lakshmi, knowing the manner (in which she may approach) will immediately come to those wise men who, knowing that it is virtue, covet not the property of others.

Kural 180

இறலீனும் எண்ணாது வெஃகின் விறல்ஈனும்
வேண்டாமை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

Iraleenum Ennaadhu Veqkin Viraleenum
Ventaamai Ennunj Cherukku

Meaning
Coveting without thinking of the consequences leads to ruin, while the proud strength of mind that says "I do not want it" leads to victory.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To covet (the wealth of another) regardless of consequences will bring destruction That greatness (of mind) which covets not will give victory.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
From thoughtless lust of other's goods springs fatal ill, Greatness of soul that covets not shall triumph still.
