Paal: Virtue (Araththuppaal) Iyal: Domestic Virtue Chapter 19: Purangooraamai

Not Backbiting (Purangooraamai, புறங்கூறாமை) is chapter 19 of the Thirukkural, in the Domestic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 181 to 190.

Kural 181

அறங்கூறான் அல்ல செயினும் ஒருவன்
புறங்கூறான் என்றல் இனிது.

Arangooraan Alla Seyinum Oruvan
Purangooraan Endral Inidhu

Meaning
A person may never speak of virtue and may even do wrong, yet it is still a good thing if people can say of him, 'At least he never runs others down behind their backs.'
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Though one do not even speak of virtue and live in sin, it will be well if it be said of him "he does not backbite.".
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though virtuous words his lips speak not, and all his deeds are ill If neighbour he defame not, there's good within him still.

Kural 182

அறனழீஇ அல்லவை செய்தலின் தீதே
புறனழீஇப் பொய்த்து நகை.

Aranazheei Allavai Seydhalin Theedhe
Puranazheeip Poiththu Nakai

Meaning
Worse than trampling on virtue and doing wrong is tearing someone down behind their back and then greeting them with a false smile to their face.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To smile deceitfully (in another's presence) after having reviled him to his destruction (behind his back) is a greater evil than the commission of (every other) sin and the destruction of (every) virtue.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Than he who virtue scorns, and evil deeds performs, more vile, Is he that slanders friend, then meets him with false smile.

Kural 183

புறங்கூறிப் பொய்த்துயிர் வாழ்தலின் சாதல்
அறங்கூற்றும் ஆக்கத் தரும்.

Purangoorip Poiththuyir Vaazhdhalin Saadhal
Arangootrum Aakkath Tharum

Meaning
For one who lives by slandering people behind their backs and faking friendship to their faces, death would bring more of the good that virtue promises than such a life.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Death rather than life will confer upon the deceitful backbiter the profit which (the treatises on) virtue point out.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' Tis greater gain of virtuous good for man to die, Than live to slander absent friend, and falsely praise when nigh.

Kural 184

கண்ணின்று கண்ணறச் சொல்லினும் சொல்லற்க
முன்னின்று பின்நோக்காச் சொல்.

Kannindru Kannarach Chollinum Sollarka
Munnindru Pinnokkaach Chol

Meaning
Even if you speak harshly to someone's face, never say things about them in their absence without thinking of the harm those words may cause later.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Though you speak without kindness before another's face speak not in his absence words which regard not the evil subsequently resulting from it.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
In presence though unkindly words you speak, say not In absence words whose ill result exceeds your thought.

Kural 185

அறஞ்சொல்லும் நெஞ்சத்தான் அன்மை புறஞ்சொல்லும்
புன்மையாற் காணப் படும்.

Aranjollum Nenjaththaan Anmai Puranjollum
Punmaiyaar Kaanap Patum

Meaning
A man may talk about virtue, but the petty habit of speaking ill of others behind their backs exposes that his heart holds no real virtue.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The emptiness of that man's mind who (merely) praises virtue will be seen from the meanness of reviling another behind his back.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The slanderous meanness that an absent friend defames,' This man in words owns virtue, not in heart,' proclaims.

Kural 186

பிறன்பழி கூறுவான் தன்பழி யுள்ளும்
திறன்தெரிந்து கூறப் படும்.

Piranpazhi Kooruvaan Thanpazhi Yullum
Thirandherindhu Koorap Patum

Meaning
Whoever spreads talk about other people's faults will find his own faults searched out, the worst of them picked, and talked about in turn.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The character of the faults of that man who publishes abroad the faults of others will be sought out and published.

Pakachchollik Kelirp Pirippar Nakachcholli
Natpaatal Thetraa Thavar

Meaning
People who do not know how to keep friendships alive with warm, pleasant talk end up spreading divisive gossip that drives apart even close friends and relatives.
Classic translations

Explanation in Tamil

Meaning
Perhaps it is only out of a sense of duty that the earth puts up with the weight of someone who waits for people to be absent and then speaks meanly of them.

Meaning
If people examined their own faults as closely as they examine other people's, would any harm ever come to living beings?
