Kural 11

வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால்
தான்அமிழ்தம் என்றுணரற் பாற்று.

Vaannindru Ulakam Vazhangi Varudhalaal
Thaanamizhdham Endrunarar Paatru

Meaning
Because the rain keeps falling, the world goes on living. That is why rain deserves to be thought of as the nectar of life itself.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
By the continuance of rain the world is preserved in existence; it is therefore worthy to be called ambrosia.

Thuppaarkkuth Thuppaaya Thuppaakkith Thuppaarkkuth
Thuppaaya Thooum Mazhai

Meaning
Rain grows the good food that people eat, and rain is also itself a food for them, as the water they drink.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Rain produces good food, and is itself food.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The rain makes pleasant food for eaters rise; As food itself, thirst-quenching draught supplies.

Kural 13

உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி.

Vinindru Poippin Virineer Viyanulakaththu
Ulnindru Utatrum Pasi

Meaning
If the sky fails to send rain, hunger will settle in and torment the people of this vast, sea-surrounded world.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If the cloud, withholding rain, deceive (our hopes) hunger will long distress the sea-girt spacious world.

வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்.

Erin Uzhaaar Uzhavar Puyalennum
Vaari Valangundrik Kaal

Meaning
When rain, the great source of plenty, runs short, farmers stop ploughing their fields with the plough.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If the abundance of wealth imparting rain diminish, the labour of the plough must cease.

Explanation in Tamil
'விசும்பு' என்பது வானம். வானிலிருந்து மழைத்துளி விழுந்தால் அன்றி, பசும்புல்லின் நுனி கூட மண்ணிலிருந்து தலைகாட்டுவது அரிது. பெரிய பயிர்கள் மட்டுமல்ல, மிகச் சிறிய புல் கூட மழை இன்றி முளைக்காது என்று கூறி, மழையின் இன்றியமையாமையை வள்ளுவர் வலியுறுத்துகிறார்.

Meaning
If the clouds draw water up from the sea and do not give it back as rain, even the vast ocean will lose its richness and its very nature.

Vaanam Vazhangaa Thenin

Meaning
If the sky withholds its rain, neither giving to others nor self-disciplined austerity will survive anywhere in this wide world.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)

வான்இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு.

Neerindru Amaiyaadhu Ulakenin Yaaryaarkkum
Vaanindru Amaiyaadhu Ozhukku

Meaning

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If it be said that the duties of life cannot be discharged by any person without water, so without rain there cannot be the flowing of water.
