Paal: Virtue (Araththuppaal) Iyal: Domestic Virtue Chapter 21: Theevinaiyachcham

Dread of Evil Deeds (Theevinaiyachcham, தீவினையச்சம்) is chapter 21 of the Thirukkural, in the Domestic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 201 to 210.

Kural 201

தீவினையார் அஞ்சார் விழுமியார் அஞ்சுவர்
தீவினை என்னும் செருக்கு.

Theevinaiyaar Anjaar Vizhumiyaar Anjuvar
Theevinai Ennum Serukku

Meaning
People hardened by wrongdoing feel no fear of it, but people of real worth dread the reckless arrogance that evil deeds bring.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those who have experience of evil deeds will not fear, but the excellent will fear the pride of sin.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
With sinful act men cease to feel the dread of ill within, The excellent will dread the wanton pride of cherished sin.

Kural 202

தீயவை தீய பயத்தலால் தீயவை
தீயினும் அஞ்சப் படும்.

Theeyavai Theeya Payaththalaal Theeyavai
Theeyinum Anjap Patum

Meaning
Because evil deeds only breed more evil, they should be feared even more than fire.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Because evil produces evil, therefore should evil be feared more than fire.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Since evils new from evils ever grow, Evil than fire works out more dreaded woe.

Kural 203

அறிவினுள் எல்லாந் தலையென்ப தீய
செறுவார்க்கும் செய்யா விடல்.

Arivinul Ellaan Thalaiyenpa Theeya
Seruvaarkkum Seyyaa Vital

Meaning
Not doing harm even to those who harm you is said to be the highest of all wisdom.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
So shalt thou wisdom's highest law, 'tis said, fulfil.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Even to those that hate make no return of ill; So shalt thou wisdom's highest law, 'tis said, fulfil.

Kural 204

மறந்தும் பிறன்கேடு சூழற்க சூழின்
அறஞ்சூழம் சூழ்ந்தவன் கேடு.

Marandhum Piranketu Soozharka Soozhin
Aranjoozham Soozhndhavan Ketu

Meaning
Never, even absent-mindedly, plot another person's ruin; if you do, righteousness itself will plot the ruin of the one who plotted.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Even though forgetfulness meditate not the ruin of another Virtue will meditate the ruin of him who thus meditates.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though good thy soul forget, plot not thy neighbour's fall, Thy plans shall 'virtue's Power' by ruin to thyself forestall.

Kural 205

இலன்என்று தீயவை செய்யற்க செய்யின்
இலனாகும் மற்றும் பெயர்த்து.

Ilan Endru Theeyavai Seyyarka
Seyyin Ilanaakum Matrum Peyarththu

Meaning
Do not do wrong with the excuse that you are poor; if you do, you will only end up poorer than before.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Commit not evil, saying, "I am poor": if you do, you will become poorer still.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Make not thy poverty a plea for ill; Thy evil deeds will make thee poorer still.

Kural 206

தீப்பால தான்பிறர்கண் செய்யற்க நோய்ப்பால
தன்னை அடல்வேண்டா தான்.

Theeppaala Thaanpirarkan Seyyarka Noippaala
Thannai Atalventaa Thaan

Meaning
Anyone who does not want suffering to come and torment them should not do harmful things to others.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let him not do evil to others who desires not that sorrows should pursue him.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
What ranks as evil spare to do, if thou would'st shun Affliction sore through ill to thee by others done.

Kural 207

வீயாது பின்சென்று அடும்.

Enaippakai Yutraarum Uyvar Vinaippakai
Veeyaadhu Pinsendru Atum

Meaning
People can survive whatever enmity they have made, but the enmity created by their own evil deeds never dies; it follows them and destroys them.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
However great be the enmity men have incurred they may still live The enmity of sin will incessantly pursue and kill.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
From every enmity incurred there is to 'scape, a way; The wrath of evil deeds will dog men's steps, and slay.

Kural 208

தீயவை செய்தார் கெடுதல் நிழல்தன்னை
வீயாது அஇஉறைந் தற்று.

Theeyavai Seydhaar Ketudhal Nizhaldhannai
Veeyaadhu Atiurain Thatru

Meaning
Ruin stays with those who do evil just as their own shadow clings to their feet and never leaves them.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Destruction will dwell at the heels of those who commit evil even as their shadow that leaves them not.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Man's shadow dogs his steps where'er he wends; Destruction thus on sinful deeds attends.

Kural 209

தன்னைத்தான் காதல னாயின் எனைத்தொன்றும்
துன்னற்க தீவினைப் பால்.

Thannaiththaan Kaadhala Naayin Enaiththondrum
Thunnarka Theevinaip Paal

Meaning
If you truly care for yourself, do not go near any kind of evil deed, however small.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If a man love himself, let him not commit any sin however small.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Beware, if to thyself thyself is dear, Lest thou to aught that ranks as ill draw near.

Kural 210

தீவினை செய்யான் எனின்.

Arungetan Enpadhu Arika Marungotith
Theevinai Seyyaan Enin

Meaning
Know that whoever never strays from the right path to do evil is someone ruin can hardly touch.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Know ye that he is freed from destruction who commits no evil, going to neither side of the right path.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
