Giving (Eekai, ஈகை) is chapter 23 of the Thirukkural, in the Domestic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 221 to 230.

Kural 221

வறியார்க்கொன்று ஈவதே ஈகைமற் றெல்லாம்
குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து.

Variyaarkkondru Eevadhe Eekaimar Rellaam
Kuriyedhirppai Neera Thutaiththu

Meaning
Only what you give to the poor is real giving. Every other gift is really a kind of loan, made with an eye on getting back a measured return.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To give to the destitute is true charity All other gifts have the nature of (what is done for) a measured return.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Call that a gift to needy men thou dost dispense, All else is void of good, seeking for recompense.

Kural 222

நல்லாறு எனினும் கொளல்தீது மேலுலகம்
இல்லெனினும் ஈதலே நன்று.

Nallaaru Eninum Kolaldheedhu Melulakam
Illeninum Eedhale Nandru

Meaning
Taking from others is wrong even if someone calls it a good road to heaven; giving is good even if there were no heaven to be gained by it.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To beg is evil, even though it were said that it is a good path (to heaven) To give is good, even though it were said that those who do so cannot obtain heaven.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though men declare it heavenward path, yet to receive is ill; Though upper heaven were not, to give is virtue still.

Kural 223

இலனென்னும் எவ்வம் உரையாமை ஈதல்
குலனுடையான் கண்ணே யுள.

Ilanennum Evvam Uraiyaamai Eedhal
Kulanutaiyaan Kanne Yula

Meaning
Never uttering the painful words 'I have nothing', but giving whatever one can to those who ask, is a quality found only in people of noble birth and upbringing.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
(Even in a low state) not to adopt the mean expedient of saying "I have nothing," but to give, is the characteristic of the mad of noble birth.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
'I've nought' is ne'er the high-born man's reply; He gives to those who raise themselves that cry.

Kural 224

இன்முகங் காணும் அளவு.

Innaadhu Irakkap Patudhal Irandhavar
Inmukang Kaanum Alavu

Meaning
Being asked for help feels unpleasant, but only until you have given and see the asker's face light up with gladness.

Meaning
The strength of ascetics lies in enduring hunger, yet that strength ranks below the strength of those who relieve the hunger of others.
Explanation in Tamil
உணவின்றிப் பசியைப் பொறுத்துக்கொள்வதே தவம் செய்பவர்களின் வலிமை. ஆனால் அந்த வலிமை, பிறருடைய பசியைப் போக்குபவர்களின் வலிமைக்கு அடுத்த இடத்தையே பெறும். தானே பசி தாங்குவதைவிட, பசித்தவருக்கு உணவளிப்பது பெரிய ஆற்றல் என்பது கருத்து.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The power of those who perform penance is the power of enduring hunger It is inferior to the power of those who remove the hunger (of others).
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Explanation in Tamil

'வன்கணவர்' என்றால் இளகாத கடுமையான மனம் உடையவர். கொடுப்பதில் கிடைக்கும் மனநிறைவை உணர்ந்தவர் செல்வத்தைப் பூட்டி வைக்க மாட்டார்.

Meaning
Eating alone, sharing with no one, just to keep filling up one's own stores, is surely more wretched than having to beg.
