Kural 231

ஈதல் இசைபட வாழ்தல் அதுவல்லது
ஊதியம் இல்லை உயிர்க்கு.

Eedhal Isaipata Vaazhdhal Adhuvalladhu
Oodhiyam Illai Uyirkku

Meaning
Giving to those in need, and living so that this giving earns you a good name, is the real gain of life. Apart from this, a living being has nothing else worth earning.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Give to the poor and live with praise There is no greater profit to man than that.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
See that thy life the praise of generous gifts obtain; Save this for living man exists no real gain.

Kural 232

உரைப்பார் உரைப்பவை எல்லாம் இரப்பார்க்கொன்று
ஈவார்மேல் நிற்கும் புகழ்.

Uraippaar Uraippavai Ellaam Irappaarkkondru
Eevaarmel Nirkum Pukazh

Meaning
All the praise that people speak of ends up resting on those who give something to whoever comes asking. Lasting renown belongs to the generous.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Whatsoever is spoken in the world will abide as praise upon that man who gives alms to the poor.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The speech of all that speak agrees to crown The men that give to those that ask, with fair renown.

Kural 233

ஒன்றா உலகத்து உயர்ந்த புகழல்லால்
பொன்றாது நிற்பதொன் றில்.

Ondraa Ulakaththu Uyarndha Pukazhallaal
Pondraadhu Nirpadhon Ril

Meaning
Everything in this world passes away; only lofty, matchless renown remains without perishing. Nothing else endures.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
There is nothing that stands forth in the world imperishable, except fame, exalted in solitary greatness.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Save praise alone that soars on high, Nought lives on earth that shall not die.

Kural 234

நிலவரை நீள்புகழ் ஆற்றின் புலவரைப்
போற்றாது புத்தேள் உலகு.

Nilavarai Neelpukazh Aatrin Pulavaraip
Potraadhu Puththel Ulaku

Meaning
If a person wins renown that spreads to the ends of the earth, the world of the gods will no longer hold its own celestials in higher esteem than him. Such earthly fame is valued even in heaven.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If one has acquired extensive fame within the limits of this earth, the world of the Gods will no longer praise those sages who have attained that world.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If men do virtuous deeds by world-wide ample glory crowned, The heavens will cease to laud the sage for other gifts renowned.

Kural 235

நத்தம்போல் கேடும் உளதாகும் சாக்காடும்
வித்தகர்க் கல்லால் அரிது.

Naththampol Ketum Uladhaakum Saakkaatum
Viththakark Kallaal Aridhu

Meaning
A loss that is really growth, and a death that brings lasting glory, are rarely achieved by anyone except the truly wise and capable.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Prosperity to the body of fame, resulting in poverty to the body of flesh and the stability to the former arising from the death of the latter, are achievable only by the wise.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Loss that is gain, and death of life's true bliss fulfilled, Are fruits which only wisdom rare can yield.

Kural 236

தோன்றின் புகழொடு தோன்றுக அஃதிலார்
தோன்றலின் தோன்றாமை நன்று.

Thondrin Pukazhotu Thondruka Aqdhilaar
Thondralin Thondraamai Nandru

Meaning
If you appear before the world, appear with qualities that bring renown. For those who lack them, it would be better not to appear at all.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If you are born (in this world), be born with qualities conductive to fame From those who are destitute of them it will be better not to be born.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If man you walk the stage, appear adorned with glory's grace; Save glorious you can shine, 'twere better hide your face.

Kural 237

புகழ்பட வாழாதார் தந்நோவார் தம்மை
இகழ்வாரை நோவது எவன்?

Pukazhpata Vaazhaadhaar Thannovaar Thammai
Ikazhvaarai Novadhu Evan?

Meaning
Those who fail to live in a way that earns a good name should blame themselves. Why do they grumble at the people who look down on them?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Why do those who cannot live with praise, grieve those who despise them, instead of grieving themselves for their own inability.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If you your days will spend devoid of goodly fame, When men despise, why blame them? You've yourself to blame.

Kural 238

வசையென்ப வையத்தார்க் கெல்லாம் இசையென்னும்
எச்சம் பெறாஅ விடின்.

Vasaiyenpa Vaiyaththaark Kellaam Isaiyennum
Echcham Peraaa Vitin

Meaning
People everywhere regard it as a disgrace if someone fails to leave behind the legacy called renown. A life that leaves no good name is counted a shameful one.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Not to beget fame will be esteemed a disgrace by the wise in this world.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Fame is virtue's child, they say; if, then, You childless live, you live the scorn of men.

Kural 239

வசையிலா வண்பயன் குன்றும் இசையிலா
யாக்கை பொறுத்த நிலம்.

Vasaiyilaa Vanpayan Kundrum Isaiyilaa
Yaakkai Poruththa Nilam

Meaning
The land that has to bear the body of a person without renown will see its rich, faultless yield dwindle. Such a person is a burden even to the earth.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The ground which supports a body without fame will diminish in its rich produce.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The blameless fruits of fields' increase will dwindle down, If earth the burthen bear of men without renown.

Kural 240

வசையொழிய வாழ்வாரே வாழ்வார் இசையொழிய
வாழ்வாரே வாழா தவர்.

Vasaiyozhiya Vaazhvaare Vaazhvaar Isaiyozhiya
Vaazhvaare Vaazhaa Thavar

Meaning
Only those who live free of blame are truly alive. Those who live without any renown are not really living, even though they breathe.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those live who live without disgrace Those who live without fame live not.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who live without reproach, them living men we deem; Who live without renown, live not, though living men they seem.
