Kural 241

அருட்செல்வம் செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் பொருட்செல்வம்
பூரியார் கண்ணும் உள.

Arutchelvam Selvaththul Selvam Porutchelvam
Pooriyaar Kannum Ula

Meaning
Compassion is the richest of all riches. Money and possessions can be found even in the hands of mean, base people, so they prove nothing about a person's worth.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The wealth of kindness is wealth of wealth, in as much as the wealth of property is possessed by the basest of men.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Wealth 'mid wealth is wealth 'kindliness'; Wealth of goods the vilest too possess.

Kural 242

நல்லாற்றாள் நாடி அருளாள்க பல்லாற்றால்
தேரினும் அஃதே துணை.

Nallaatraal Naati Arulaalka Pallaatraal
Therinum Aqdhe Thunai

Meaning
Think carefully, keep to the right path and practise compassion. However many ways of life you examine and compare, you will find that compassion alone is your true support.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
(Stand) in the good path, consider, and be kind. Even considering according to the conflicting tenets of the different sects, kindness will be your best aid, (in the acquisition of heavenly bliss.).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The law of 'grace' fulfil, by methods good due trial made, Though many systems you explore, this is your only aid.

Kural 243

இன்னா உலகம் புகல்.

Arulserndha Nenjinaark Killai Irulserndha
Innaa Ulakam Pukal

Meaning
Those whose hearts are filled with compassion will never have to enter the dark world of suffering.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
They will never enter the world of darkness and wretchedness whose minds are the abode of kindness.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
They in whose breast a 'gracious kindliness' resides, See not the gruesome world, where darkness drear abides.

Kural 244

மன்னுயிர் ஓம்பி அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லென்ப
தன்னுயிர் அஞ்சும் வினை.

Mannuyir Ompi Arulaalvaarkku Illenpa
Thannuyir Anjum Vinai

Meaning
The wise say that one who protects living beings and treats them with compassion will never face the kind of evil deeds and consequences that make one's own soul tremble.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
(The wise) say that the evils, which his soul would dread, will never come upon the man who exercises kindness and protects the life (of other creatures).

மல்லன்மா ஞாலங் கரி.

Allal Arulaalvaarkku Illai Valivazhangum
Mallanmaa Gnaalang Kari

Meaning
Sorrow does not come to those who are compassionate; this great, fertile earth, swept by the winds, stands as witness to that.
Explanation in Tamil
அருள் உடையவர்களுக்குத் துன்பம் இல்லை. இதற்குக் காற்று வீசும் இந்த வளமான பெரிய உலகமே சான்றாக நிற்கிறது. 'வளி' என்றால் காற்று, 'மல்லல்' என்றால் வளம், 'கரி' என்றால் சான்று. இரக்கம் உள்ளவர்கள் துன்பமின்றி வாழ்வதை உலகில் எங்கும் காணலாம் என்பது இதன் பொருள்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
This great rich earth over which the wind blows, is a witness that sorrow never comes upon the kindhearted.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The teeming earth's vast realm, round which the wild winds blow, Is witness, men of 'grace' no woeful want shall know.

Kural 246

Porulneengip Pochchaandhaar Enpar Arulneengi
Allavai Seydhozhuku Vaar

Meaning
The wise say that people who abandon compassion and live by doing wrong have lost sight of what truly matters in life and forgotten the suffering that awaits them.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
(The wise) say that those who neglect kindness and practise cruelties, neglected virtue (in their former birth), and forgot (the sorrows which they must suffer.).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Gain of true wealth oblivious they eschew, Who 'grace' forsake, and graceless actions do.

Kural 247

அருளில்லார்க்கு அவ்வுலகம் இல்லை பொருளில்லார்க்கு
இவ்வுலகம் இல்லாகி யாங்கு.

Arulillaarkku Avvulakam Illai Porulillaarkku
Ivvulakam Illaaki Yaangu

Meaning
Just as this world offers nothing to those without wealth, the next world offers nothing to those without compassion.
Explanation in Tamil
பொருள் இல்லாதவர்களுக்கு இந்த உலக வாழ்க்கை இன்பம் தருவதில்லை. அதுபோலவே, அருள் இல்லாதவர்களுக்கு மறுஉலக நன்மை கிடைப்பதில்லை. இவ்வுலக வாழ்வுக்குப் பொருள் எவ்வளவு தேவையோ, அவ்வுலக வாழ்வுக்கு அருள் அவ்வளவு தேவை என்பது இதன் கருத்து.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
As this world is not for those who are without wealth, so that world is not for those who are without kindness.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
As to impoverished men this present world is not; The 'graceless' in you world have neither part nor lot.

Kural 248

பொருளற்றார் பூப்பர் ஒருகால் அருளற்றார்
அற்றார்மற் றாதல் அரிது.

Porulatraar Pooppar Orukaal Arulatraar
Atraarmar Raadhal Aridhu

Meaning
People who lose their wealth may flourish again someday, but those who lose compassion have lost everything, and it is rare for them ever to recover.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those who are without wealth may, at some future time, become prosperous; those who are destitute of kindness are utterly destitute; for them there is no change.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who lose the flower of wealth, when seasons change, again may bloom; Who lose 'benevolence', lose all; nothing can change their doom.

அருளாதான் செய்யும் அறம்.

Therulaadhaan Meypporul Kantatraal Therin
Arulaadhaan Seyyum Aram

Meaning
Looked at closely, good deeds done by someone without compassion are like a muddled mind claiming to grasp the ultimate truth: it simply cannot happen.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If you consider, the virtue of him who is without kindness is like the perception of the true being by him who is without wisdom.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
When souls unwise true wisdom's mystic vision see, The 'graceless' man may work true works of charity.

Kural 250

வலியார்முன் தன்னை நினைக்கதான் தன்னின்
மெலியார்மேல் செல்லு மிடத்து.

Valiyaarmun Thannai Ninaikka Thaan
Thannin Meliyaarmel Sellu Mitaththu

Meaning
When you are about to move against people weaker than yourself, remember how you felt standing before those stronger than you.
