Paal: Virtue (Araththuppaal) Iyal: Ascetic Virtue Chapter 26: Pulaanmaruththal

Abstinence from Flesh (Pulaanmaruththal, புலால் மறுத்தல்) is chapter 26 of the Thirukkural, in the Ascetic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 251 to 260.

Kural 251

தன்னூன் பெருக்கற்குத் தான்பிறிது ஊனுண்பான்
எங்ஙனம் ஆளும் அருள்?

Thannoon Perukkarkuth Thaanpiridhu Oonunpaan
Engnganam Aalum Arul?

Meaning
How can someone who eats the flesh of another creature just to build up his own body be truly compassionate? Feeding oneself on another life sits uneasily with kindness.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
How can he be possessed of kindness, who to increase his own flesh, eats the flesh of other creatures.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
How can the wont of 'kindly grace' to him be known, Who other creatures' flesh consumes to feed his own.

Kural 252

பொருளாட்சி போற்றாதார்க்கு இல்லை அருளாட்சி
ஆங்கில்லை ஊன்தின் பவர்க்கு.

Porulaatchi Potraadhaarkku Illai Arulaatchi
Aangillai Oondhin Pavarkku

Meaning
Just as people who do not look after their wealth cannot really enjoy it, people who eat meat cannot truly hold on to compassion.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
As those possess no property who do not take care of it, so those possess no kindness who feed on flesh.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
No use of wealth have they who guard not their estate; No use of grace have they with flesh who hunger sate.

Kural 253

படைகொண்டார் நெஞ்சம்போல் நன்னூக்காது ஒன்றன்
உடல்சுவை உண்டார் மனம்.

Pataikontaar Nenjampol Nannookkaadhu Ondran
Utalsuvai Untaar Manam

Meaning
Like the heart of someone gripping a weapon, the mind of one who has relished the taste of another creature's body does not turn towards goodness.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Like the (murderous) mind of him who carries a weapon (in his hand), the mind of him who feasts with pleasure on the body of another (creature), has no regard for goodness.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Like heart of them that murderous weapons bear, his mind, Who eats of savoury meat, no joy in good can find.

Kural 254

அருளல்ல தியாதெனிற் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பொருளல்லது அவ்வூன் தினல்.

Arulalladhu Yaadhenin Kollaamai Koral
Porulalladhu Avvoon Thinal

Meaning
If you ask what compassion is, it is not killing; its opposite is killing. So eating the flesh that comes from killing cannot be right.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If it be asked what is kindness and what its opposite, the answer would be preservation and destruction of life; and therefore it is not right to feed on the flesh (obtained by taking away life).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' What's grace, or lack of grace'? ' To kill' is this, that 'not to kill'; To eat dead flesh can never worthy end fulfil.

Kural 255

உண்ணாமை உள்ளது உயிர்நிலை ஊனுண்ண
அண்ணாத்தல் செய்யாது அளறு.

Unnaamai Ulladhu Uyirnilai Oonunna
Annaaththal Seyyaadhu Alaru

Meaning
Living beings survive because flesh is not eaten; but the one who eats flesh is swallowed by hell, which never opens its mouth to let him out again.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Not to eat flesh contributes to the continuance of life; therefore if a man eat flesh, hell will not open its mouth (to let him escape out, after he has once fallen in).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If flesh you eat not, life's abodes unharmed remain; Who eats, hell swallows him, and renders not again.

Kural 256

தினற்பொருட்டால் கொல்லாது உலகெனின் யாரும்
விலைப்பொருட்டால் ஊன்றருவா ரில்.

Thinarporuttaal Kollaadhu Ulakenin Yaarum
Vilaipporuttaal Oondraruvaa Ril

Meaning
If people did not kill for the sake of eating, no one would kill animals and sell their meat for money. Those who buy and eat share in the killing.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If the world does not destroy life for the purpose of eating, then no one would sell flesh for the sake of money.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' We eat the slain,' you say, by us no living creatures die; Who'd kill and sell, I pray, if none came there the flesh to buy.

Kural 257

உண்ணாமை வேண்டும் புலாஅல் பிறிதொன்றன்
புண்ணது உணர்வார்ப் பெறின்.

Unnaamai Ventum Pulaaal Piridhondran
Punnadhu Unarvaarp Perin

Meaning
Meat is nothing but the wound of another creature's body. Anyone who truly grasps this should refrain from eating it.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If men should come to know that flesh is nothing but the unclean ulcer of a body, let them abstain from eating it.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
With other beings' ulcerous wounds their hunger they appease; If this they felt, desire to eat must surely cease.

Kural 258

செயிரின் தலைப்பிரிந்த காட்சியார் உண்ணார்
உயிரின் தலைப்பிரிந்த ஊன்.

Seyirin Thalaippirindha Kaatchiyaar Unnaar
Uyirin Thalaippirindha Oon

Meaning
People whose understanding is clear and free from delusion will not eat flesh taken from a body that life has left.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The wise, who have freed themselves from mental delusion, will not eat the flesh which has been severed from an animal.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Whose souls the vision pure and passionless perceive, Eat not the bodies men of life bereave.

Kural 259

அவிசொரிந் தாயிரம் வேட்டலின் ஒன்றன்
உயிர்செகுத் துண்ணாமை நன்று.

Avisorin Thaayiram Vettalin Ondran
Uyirsekuth Thunnaamai Nandru

Meaning
Refusing to kill a creature and eat it is better than performing a thousand fire sacrifices with offerings of ghee poured into the flames.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Not to kill and eat (the flesh of) an animal, is better than the pouring forth of ghee etc, in a thousand sacrifices.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Than thousand rich oblations, with libations rare, Better the flesh of slaughtered beings not to share.

Kural 260

கொல்லான் புலாலை மறுத்தானைக் கைகூப்பி
எல்லா உயிருந் தொழும்.

Kollaan Pulaalai Maruththaanaik Kaikooppi
Ellaa Uyirun Thozhum

Meaning
Every living creature will fold its hands in reverence before the person who kills nothing and refuses to eat meat.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
All creatures will join their hands together, and worship him who has never taken away life, nor eaten flesh.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who slays nought,- flesh rejects- his feet before All living things with clasped hands adore.
