The Absence of Fraud (Kallaamai, கள்ளாமை) is chapter 29 of the Thirukkural, in the Ascetic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 281 to 290.

Kural 281

எள்ளாமை வேண்டுவான் என்பான் எனைத்தொன்றும்
கள்ளாமை காக்கதன் நெஞ்சு.

Ellaamai Ventuvaan Enpaan Enaiththondrum
Kallaamai Kaakkadhan Nenju

Meaning
Anyone who wants to live without being looked down on must guard his mind so that it never schemes to take anything belonging to others, however small.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let him, who desires not to be despised, keep his mind from (the desire of) defrauding another of the smallest thing.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who seeks heaven's joys, from impious levity secure, Let him from every fraud preserve his spirit pure.

Kural 282

உள்ளத்தால் உள்ளலும் தீதே பிறன்பொருளைக்
கள்ளத்தால் கள்வேம் எனல்.

Ullaththaal Ullalum Theedhe Piranporulaik
Kallaththaal Kalvem Enal

Meaning
Even to think privately, "I will cheat this person out of what is his," is already wrong, whether or not the deed follows.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Even the thought (of sin) is sin; think not then of crafiily stealing the property of another.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' Tis sin if in the mind man but thought conceive;' By fraud I will my neighbour of his wealth bereave.'.

Kural 283

களவினால் ஆகிய ஆக்கம் அளவிறந்து
ஆவது போலக் கெடும்.

Kalavinaal Aakiya Aakkam Alavirandhu
Aavadhu Polak Ketum

Meaning
Wealth built up by theft may look as though it is growing without limit, but it will be lost entirely in the end.
Explanation in Tamil
திருட்டின் மூலம் சேர்ந்த செல்வம் அளவில்லாமல் பெருகுவது போலத் தோன்றினாலும், இறுதியில் முழுவதுமாக அழிந்துவிடும். அதன் வளர்ச்சி வெறும் தோற்றமே; அது நிலைத்து நிற்காது. ஏமாற்றிச் சேர்த்த பணம் விரைவாக வந்தது போலவே விரைவாகப் போய்விடுவதை வாழ்க்கையில் காணலாம்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The property, which is acquired by fraud, will entirely perish, even while it seems to increase.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The gain that comes by fraud, although it seems to grow With limitless increase, to ruin swift shall go.

Kural 284

களவின்கண் கன்றிய காதல் விளைவின்கண்
வீயா விழுமம் தரும்.

Kalavinkan Kandriya Kaadhal Vilaivinkan
Veeyaa Vizhumam Tharum

Meaning
A craving for stealing that has hardened into habit yields, when its results finally arrive, sorrow that never ends.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The eager desire of defrauding others will, when it brings forth its fruit, produce undying sorrow.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The lust inveterate of fraudful gain, Yields as its fruit undying pain.

Kural 285

அருள்கருதி அன்புடைய ராதல் பொருள்கருதிப்
பொச்சாப்புப் பார்ப்பார்கண் இல்.

Arulkarudhi Anputaiya Raadhal Porulkarudhip
Pochchaappup Paarppaarkan Il

Meaning
People who wait for others to drop their guard so they can take their belongings cannot be kind-hearted people who value compassion.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The study of kindness and the exercise of benevolence is not with those who watch for another's forgetfulness, though desire of his property.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' Grace' is not in their thoughts, nor know they kind affection's power, Who neighbour's goods desire, and watch for his unguarded hour.

கன்றிய காத லவர்.

Alavinkan Nindrozhukal Aatraar Kalavinkan
Kandriya Kaadha Lavar

Meaning
Those gripped by a deep craving to steal are unable to live within the bounds of right conduct.
Explanation in Tamil
திருட்டில் முற்றிய ஆசை கொண்டவர்கள், நெறியின் எல்லைக்குள் நின்று ஒழுங்காக வாழ இயலாதவர்கள். 'அளவு' என்பது முறையான வரம்பு, அதாவது தனக்கு உரியதை மட்டும் கொள்ளும் நேர்மை. பிறர் பொருள் மீது கண் வைத்தவருடைய மனம் அவரை எப்போதும் வரம்பு மீறவே தூண்டும்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
They cannot walk steadfastly, according to rule, who eagerly desire to defraud others.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
They cannot walk restrained in wisdom's measured bound, In whom inveterate lust of fraudful gain is found.

Kural 287

களவென்னும் காரறி வாண்மை அளவென்னும்
ஆற்றல் புரிந்தார்கண்ட இல்.

Kalavennum Kaarari Vaanmai Alavennum
Aatral Purindhaarkanta Il

Meaning
The dark cleverness that is theft is never found in those who value the true strength of keeping within just limits.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
That black-knowledge which is called fraud, is not in those who desire that greatness which is called rectitude.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Practice of fraud's dark cunning arts they shun, Who long for power by 'measured wisdom' won.

Kural 288

அளவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சத் தறம்போல நிற்கும்
களவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சில் கரவு.

Alavarindhaar Nenjath Tharampola Nirkum
Kalavarindhaar Nenjil Karavu

Meaning
Just as goodness stays firmly in the hearts of those who know proper limits, deceit settles firmly in the hearts of those practised in stealing.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Deceit dwells in the mind of those who are conversant with fraud, even as virtue in the minds of those who are conversant with rectitude.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
As virtue dwells in heart that 'measured wisdom' gains; Deceit in hearts of fraudful men established reigns.

Kural 289

அளவல்ல செய்தாங்கே வீவர் களவல்ல
மற்றைய தேற்றா தவர்.

Alavalla Seydhaange Veevar Kalavalla
Matraiya Thetraa Thavar

Meaning
Those who know no way of life except stealing commit deeds beyond all bounds and are destroyed in the very act.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those, who are acquainted with nothing but fraud, will perish in the very commission of transgression.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who have no lore save that which fraudful arts supply, Acts of unmeasured vice committing straightway die.

Kural 290

கள்வார்க்குத் தள்ளும் உயிர்நிலை கள்வார்க்குத்
தள்ளாது புத்தே ளுளகு.

Kalvaarkkuth Thallum Uyirnilai Kalvaarkkuth
Thallaadhu Puththe Lulaku

Meaning
For those who steal, even their own life gives way; for those who do not steal, even the world of the gods will not be denied.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Even their body will fail the fraudulent; but even the world of the gods will not fail those who are free from fraud.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The fraudful forfeit life and being here below; Who fraud eschew the bliss of heavenly beings know.
