Restraining Anger (Vekulaamai, வெகுளாமை) is chapter 31 of the Thirukkural, in the Ascetic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 301 to 310.

Kural 301

செல்லிடத்துக் காப்பான் சினங்காப்பான் அல்லிடத்துக்
காக்கின்என் காவாக்கால் என்?

Sellitaththuk Kaappaan Sinangaappaan Allitaththuk
Kaakkinen Kaavaakkaal En?

Meaning
The person who truly restrains anger is the one who holds it back where it could actually do harm. Where anger has no power to hurt anyone, what does it matter whether you restrain it or not?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
He restrains his anger who restrains it when it can injure; when it cannot injure, what does it matter whether he restrain it, or not ?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Where thou hast power thy angry will to work, thy wrath restrain; Where power is none, what matter if thou check or give it rein.

Kural 302

செல்லா இடத்துச் சினந்தீது செல்லிடத்தும்
இல்அதனின் தீய பிற.

Sellaa Itaththuch Chinandheedhu Sellitaththum
Iladhanin Theeya Pira

Meaning
Anger is harmful even when it cannot touch the person it is aimed at. When it can actually hurt someone, there is no greater evil than it.
Explanation in Tamil
தன் சினம் செல்லுபடியாகாத வலியவரிடம் கோபப்படுவது தீமையே; அது திரும்பத் தனக்கே துன்பம் தரும். சினம் செல்லுபடியாகும் எளியவரிடம் கோபப்பட்டாலோ, அதைவிடக் கொடிய தீமை வேறு எதுவும் இல்லை. ஆகவே எந்த இடத்திலும் கோபம் நன்மை தருவதில்லை என்பது கருத்து.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Anger is bad, even when it cannot injure; when it can injure; there is no greater evil.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Where power is none to wreak thy wrath, wrath importent is ill; Where thou hast power thy will to work, 'tis greater, evil still.

Kural 303

மறத்தல் வெகுளியை யார்மாட்டும் தீய
பிறத்தல் அதனான் வரும்.

Maraththal Vekuliyai Yaarmaattum Theeya
Piraththal Adhanaan Varum

Meaning
Let go of anger towards everyone, whoever they may be, because all kinds of harm grow out of it.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Forget anger towards every one, as fountains of evil spring from it.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If any rouse thy wrath, the trespass straight forget; For wrath an endless train of evils will beget.

Kural 304

நகையும் உவகையும் கொல்லும் சினத்தின்
பகையும் உளவோ பிற.

Nakaiyum Uvakaiyum Kollum Sinaththin
Pakaiyum Ulavo Pira

Meaning
Anger kills both the smile on your face and the joy in your heart. Is there any enemy worse than that?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
What other foe to man works such annoy?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Wrath robs the face of smiles, the heart of joy, What other foe to man works such annoy.

Kural 305

தன்னைத்தான் காக்கின் சினங்காக்க காவாக்கால்
தன்னையே கொல்லுஞ் சினம்.

Thannaiththaan Kaakkin Sinangaakka Kaavaakkaal
Thannaiye Kollunj Chinam

Meaning
If you want to protect yourself, keep guard over your anger. If you fail to, that very anger will destroy you.
Explanation in Tamil
ஒருவன் தன்னைத் துன்பத்திலிருந்து காத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பினால், முதலில் தன் சினத்தை அடக்கிக் காக்க வேண்டும். அப்படி அடக்காவிட்டால், அந்தச் சினமே அவனை அழித்துவிடும். பிறரைத் தாக்க எழும் கோபம் இறுதியில் கோபப்படுபவனுக்கே உடலுக்கும் மனத்துக்கும் கேடு தருகிறது.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If a man would guard himself, let him guard against anger; if he do not guard it, anger will kill him.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If thou would'st guard thyself, guard against wrath alway;' Gainst wrath who guards not, him his wrath shall slay.

Kural 306

சினமென்னும் சேர்ந்தாரைக் கொல்லி இனமென்னும்
ஏமப் புணையைச் சுடும்.

Sinamennum Serndhaaraik Kolli Inamennum
Emap Punaiyaich Chutum

Meaning
Anger is a fire that destroys whoever holds on to it, and it also burns up the circle of family and friends that keeps a person safe, like a raft in a flood.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The fire of anger will burn up even the pleasant raft of friendship.

Nilaththaraindhaan Kaipizhaiyaa Thatru

Meaning
Whoever treats anger as something worth having is sure to come to ruin, just as the hand that slaps the ground is sure to be hurt.
Explanation in Tamil
தரையை ஓங்கி அறைந்தவனின் கை வலியிலிருந்து தப்பாது. அதுபோல, சினத்தைப் பெருமைக்குரிய ஒன்றாகவோ தனக்குப் பயன்படும் கருவியாகவோ எண்ணுபவன் அழிவை அடைவதும் தப்பாது. கோபத்தால் மற்றவரை அடக்கிவிடலாம் என்று நினைப்பவர் இறுதியில் தாமே அடிபடுவர்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Destruction will come upon him who ragards anger as a good thing, as surely as the hand of him who strikes the ground will not fail.

Kural 308

புணரின் வெகுளாமை நன்று.

Inareri Thoivanna Innaa Seyinum
Punarin Vekulaamai Nandru

Meaning
Even if someone causes you pain as fierce as being plunged into blazing flames, it is good, if you can manage it, not to become angry.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Though one commit things against you as painful (to bear) as if a bundle of fire had been thrust upon you, it will be well, to refrain, if possible, from anger.

Meaning
If a person never lets anger take hold in the mind, everything they set their heart on will come to them readily.
Explanation in Tamil
ஒருவன் தன் மனத்தில் சினத்தை ஒருபோதும் இடம்கொடுத்து நினைக்காமல் இருந்தால், அவன் எண்ணிய நன்மைகள் எல்லாம் உடனே அவனை வந்தடையும். கோபம் இல்லாத தெளிந்த மனம் சரியாகச் சிந்திக்கவும், எடுத்த செயலைத் தடையின்றி முடிக்கவும் உதவும்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)

Thurandhaar Thurandhaar Thunai

Meaning
Those who go to extremes of anger are as good as dead, while those who have given up anger stand equal to those who have renounced everything.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those, who give way to excessive anger, are no better than dead men; but those, who are freed from it, are equal to those who are freed (from death).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
