Not doing Evil (Innaaseyyaamai, இன்னா செய்யாமை) is chapter 32 of the Thirukkural, in the Ascetic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 311 to 320.

Kural 311

சிறப்பீனும் செல்வம் பெறினும் பிறர்க்குஇன்னா
செய்யாமை மாசற்றார் கோள்.

Sirappeenum Selvam Perinum Pirarkku
Innaa Seyyaamai Maasatraar Kol

Meaning
Even if hurting others would bring them wealth and high standing, people whose minds are free of stain hold firmly to the rule of never causing others harm.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
It is the determination of the spotless not to cause sorrow to others, although they could (by so causing) obtain the wealth which confers greatness.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though ill to neighbour wrought should glorious pride of wealth secure, No ill to do is fixed decree of men in spirit pure.

Kural 312

கறுத்துஇன்னா செய்தவக் கண்ணும் மறுத்தின்னா
செய்யாமை மாசற்றார் கோள்.

Karuththuinnaa Seydhavak Kannum Maruththinnaa
Seyyaamai Maasatraar Kol

Meaning
Even when someone, out of anger, has done them harm, the pure-hearted make it their principle not to strike back with harm of their own.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
It is the determination of the spotless not to do evil, even in return, to those who have cherished enmity and done them evil.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though malice work its worst, planning no ill return, to endure, And work no ill, is fixed decree of men in spirit pure.

Kural 313

செய்யாமல் செற்றார்க்கும் இன்னாத செய்தபின்
உய்யா விழுமந் தரும்.

Seyyaamal Setraarkkum Innaadha Seydhapin
Uyyaa Vizhuman Tharum

Meaning
Even if people hate you though you did them no wrong, harming them in return will later bring you a sorrow you cannot escape.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
In an ascetic inflict suffering even on those who hate him, when he has not done them any evil, it will afterwards give him irretrievable sorrow.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though unprovoked thy soul malicious foes should sting, Retaliation wrought inevitable woes will bring.

Kural 314

இன்னாசெய் தாரை ஒறுத்தல் அவர்நாண
நன்னயஞ் செய்து விடல்.

Innaasey Thaarai Oruththal Avarnaana
Nannayanj Cheydhu Vital

Meaning
The best way to punish those who wronged you is to do them such kindness that they feel ashamed, and then let both the wrong and the kindness go.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The (proper) punishment to those who have done evil (to you), is to put them to shame by showing them kindness, in return and to forget both the evil and the good done on both sides.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
To punish wrong, with kindly benefits the doers ply; Thus shame their souls; but pass the ill unheeded by.

Kural 315

அறிவினான் ஆகுவ துண்டோ பிறிதின்நோய்
தந்நோய்போல் போற்றாக் கடை.

Arivinaan Aakuva Thunto Piridhinnoi
Thannoipol Potraak Katai

Meaning
What good is all one's knowledge if one does not treat another creature's pain as one's own and try to shield it from that pain?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
What benefit has he derived from his knowledge, who does not endeavour to keep off pain from another as much as from himself ?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
From wisdom's vaunted lore what doth the learner gain, If as his own he guard not others' souls from pain.

Kural 316

வேண்டும் பிறன்கண் செயல்.

Innaa Enaththaan Unarndhavai Thunnaamai
Ventum Pirankan Seyal

Meaning
Whatever you have learned is painful when done to you, you should never go near doing to anyone else.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let not a man consent to do those things to another which, he knows, will cause sorrow.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
What his own soul has felt as bitter pain, From making others feel should man abstain.

Kural 317

மாணாசெய் யாமை தலை.

Enaiththaanum Egngnaandrum Yaarkkum Manaththaanaam
Maanaasey Yaamai Thalai

Meaning
The highest virtue is never to knowingly do harm to anyone, at any time, in even the smallest degree.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
It is the chief of all virtues not knowingly to do any person evil, even in the lowest degree, and at any time.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
To work no wilful woe, in any wise, through all the days, To any living soul, is virtue's highest praise.

Kural 318

மன்னுயிர்க்கு இன்னா செயல்.

Thannuyirkaku Ennaamai Thaanarivaan Enkolo
Mannuyirkku Innaa Seyal

Meaning
A person knows well what hurts his own life; why, then, does he inflict such hurt on the other living beings of the world?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Why does a man inflict upon other creatures those sufferings, which he has found by experience are sufferings to himself ?.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Whose soul has felt the bitter smart of wrong, how can He wrongs inflict on ever-living soul of man.

Kural 319

பிறர்க்கின்னா முற்பகல் செய்யின் தமக்குஇன்னா
பிற்பகல் தாமே வரும்.

Pirarkkinnaa Murpakal Seyyin Thamakku
Innaa Pirpakal Thaame Varum

Meaning
If you cause others pain in the morning, pain will find its own way back to you by the afternoon.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If a man inflict sorrow upon others in the morning, it will come upon him unsought in the very evening.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
If, ere the noontide, you to others evil do, Before the eventide will evil visit you.

Kural 320

நோயெல்லாம் நோய்செய்தார் மேலவாம் நோய்செய்யார்
நோயின்மை வேண்டு பவர்.

Noyellaam Noiseydhaar Melavaam Noiseyyaar
Noyinmai Ventu Pavar

Meaning
All suffering falls back on those who make others suffer; so those who want a life free of suffering take care never to cause it.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Sorrow will come upon those who cause pain to others; therfore those, who desire to be free from sorrow, give no pain to others.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
O'er every evil-doer evil broodeth still; He evil shuns who freedom seeks from ill.
