Instability (Nilaiyaamai, நிலையாமை) is chapter 34 of the Thirukkural, in the Ascetic Virtue section of Araththuppaal (அறத்துப்பால், Virtue). It holds kurals 331 to 340.

Kural 331

நில்லாத வற்றை நிலையின என்றுணரும்
புல்லறி வாண்மை கடை.

Nillaadha Vatrai Nilaiyina Endrunarum
Pullari Vaanmai Katai

Meaning
Mistaking things that do not last for things that will last forever is the lowest kind of foolish understanding.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
That ignorance which considers those things to be stable which are not so, is dishonourable (to the wise).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Lowest and meanest lore, that bids men trust secure, In things that pass away, as things that shall endure.

Kural 332

கூத்தாட்டு அவைக்குழாத் தற்றே பெருஞ்செல்வம்
போக்கும் அதுவிளிந் தற்று.

Kooththaattu Avaik Kuzhaath Thatre
Perunjelvam Pokkum Adhuvilin Thatru

Meaning
Great wealth gathers the way a crowd fills a hall for a dance performance, and it leaves just as that crowd melts away once the show is over.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The acquisition of wealth is like the gathering together of an assembly for a theatre; its expenditure is like the breaking up of that assembly.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
As crowds round dancers fill the hall, is wealth's increase; Its loss, as throngs dispersing, when the dances cease.

Kural 333

அற்கா இயல்பிற்றுச் செல்வம் அதுபெற்றால்
அற்குப ஆங்கே செயல்.

Arkaa Iyalpitruch Chelvam Adhupetraal
Arkupa Aange Seyal

Meaning
Wealth by its very nature does not stay. So the moment you have it, use it straight away for deeds whose worth endures.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Wealth is perishable; let those who obtain it immediately practise those (virtues) which are imperishable.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Unenduring is all wealth; if you wealth enjoy, Enduring works in working wealth straightway employ.

Kural 334

நாளென ஒன்றுபோற் காட்டி உயிர்ஈரும்
வாளது உணர்வார்ப் பெறின்.

Naalena Ondrupor Kaatti Uyir
Eerum Vaaladhu Unarvaarp Perin

Meaning
A day looks like a harmless measure of time, but those who truly understand see it as a blade steadily cutting away at life.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Time, which shows itself (to the ignorant) as if it were something (real) is in the estimation of the wise (only) a saw which cuts down life.

Kural 335

மேற்சென்று செய்யப் படும்

Naachchetru Vikkulmel Vaaraamun Nalvinai
Mersendru Seyyap Patum

Meaning
Before the tongue falls silent and the dying hiccup rises, hurry and do good deeds.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let virtuous deeds be done quickly, before the hiccup comes making the tongue silent.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Before the tongue lie powerless, 'mid the gasp of gurgling breath, Arouse thyself, and do good deeds beyond the power of death.

Kural 336

நெருநல் உளனொருவன் இன்றில்லை என்னும்
பெருமை உடைத்துஇவ் வுலகு.

Nerunal Ulanoruvan Indrillai Ennum
Perumai Utaiththuiv Vulaku

Meaning
This world can boast of one 'distinction': a person who was here yesterday is gone today.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
This world possesses the greatness that one who yesterday was is not today.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Existing yesterday, today to nothing hurled!-Such greatness owns this transitory world.

Kotiyum Alla Pala

Meaning
People who cannot be sure of living even one more moment still go on turning over countless plans and wishes, far more than millions.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Innumerable are the thoughts which occupy the mind of (the unwise), who know not that they shall live another moment.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

உடம்பொடு உயிரிடை நட்பு.

Kutampai Thaniththu Ozhiyap Pulparan
Thatre Utampotu Uyiritai Natpu

Meaning
The bond between body and life is like that of a bird and its nest: one day the bird simply flies off, leaving the nest behind, empty and alone.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The love of the soul to the body is like (the love of) a bird to its egg which it flies away from and leaves empty.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Birds fly away, and leave the nest deserted bare; Such is the short-lived friendship soul and body share.

Kural 339

விழிப்பது போலும் பிறப்பு.

Urangu Vadhupolunj Chaakkaatu Urangi
Vizhippadhu Polum Pirappu

Meaning
Death is like falling asleep, and birth is like waking up again after that sleep.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Death is like sleep; birth is like awaking from it.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Death is sinking into slumbers deep; Birth again is waking out of sleep.

Kural 340

புக்கில் அமைந்தின்று கொல்லோ உடம்பினுள்
துச்சில் இருந்த உயிர்க்கு.

Pukkil Amaindhindru Kollo Utampinul
Thuchchil Irundha Uyirkku

Meaning
Life stays in the body only like a lodger in a borrowed shelter; is it that it has still not found a home of its own to settle in?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
It seems as if the soul, which takes a temporary shelter in a body, had not attained a home.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The soul in fragile shed as lodger courts repose:-Is it because no home's conclusive rest it knows.
