Kural 341

யாதனின் யாதனின் நீங்கியான் நோதல்
அதனின் அதனின் இலன்.

Yaadhanin Yaadhanin Neengiyaan Nodhal
Adhanin Adhanin Ilan

Meaning
Whatever a person has let go of, that particular thing can no longer cause him pain. The more things one frees oneself from, the fewer the sources of suffering.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Whatever thing, a man has renounced, by that thing; he cannot suffer pain.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
From whatever, aye, whatever, man gets free, From what, aye, from that, no more of pain hath he.

Kural 342

வேண்டின்உண் டாகத் துறக்க துறந்தபின்
ஈண்டுஇயற் பால பல.

Ventin Un Taakath Thurakka
Thurandhapin Eentuiyar Paala Pala

Meaning
If you truly want lasting good, renounce while there is still time. Once you have renounced, many good things are open to you even in this life.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
After a man has renounced (all things), there will still be many things in this world (which he may enjoy); if he should desire them, let him, while it is time abandon (the world).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' Renunciation' made- ev'n here true pleasures men acquire;' Renounce' while time is yet, if to those pleasures you aspire.

Kural 343

அடல்வேண்டும் ஐந்தன் புலத்தை விடல்வேண்டும்
வேண்டிய வெல்லாம் ஒருங்கு.

Atalventum Aindhan Pulaththai Vitalventum
Ventiya Vellaam Orungu

Meaning
One must master the pull of the five senses and their objects, and give up everything one has desired, all of it together rather than bit by bit.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let the five senses be destroyed; and at the same time, let everything be abandoned that (the ascetic) has (formerly) desired.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' Perceptions of the five' must all expire;-Relinquished in its order each desire.

Kural 344

இயல்பாகும் நோன்பிற்கொன்று இன்மை உடைமை
மயலாகும் மற்றும் பெயர்த்து.

Iyalpaakum Nonpirkondru Inmai Utaimai
Mayalaakum Matrum Peyarththu

Meaning
Owning nothing at all is the natural state for one who has taken up austerity. Holding on to even a single possession draws the mind back into the confusion it had left behind.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To be altogether destitute is the proper condition of those who perform austerities; if they possess anything, it will change (their resolution) and bring them back to their confused state.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' Privation absolute' is penance true;' Possession' brings bewilderment anew.

Kural 345

மற்றும் தொடர்ப்பாடு எவன்கொல் பிறப்பறுக்கல்
உற்றார்க்கு உடம்பும் மிகை.

Matrum Thotarppaatu Evankol Pirapparukkal
Utraarkku Utampum Mikai

Meaning
For those striving to end the cycle of rebirth, even their own body is one burden too many. Why, then, take on any further ties and attachments?
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
What means the addition of other things those who are attempting to cut off (future) births, when even their body is too much (for them).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
To those who sev'rance seek from being's varied strife, Flesh is burthen sore; what then other bonds of life.

Kural 346

யான்எனது என்னும் செருக்குஅறுப்பான் வானோர்க்கு
உயர்ந்த உலகம் புகும்.

Yaan Enadhu Ennum Serukku
Aruppaan Vaanorkku Uyarndha Ulakam

Meaning
Whoever cuts away the pride of 'I' and 'mine' will reach a world higher even than that of the celestial beings.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Shall enter realms above the powers divine.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who kills conceit that utters 'I' and 'mine', Shall enter realms above the powers divine.

Kural 347

பற்றி விடாஅ இடும்பைகள் பற்றினைப்
பற்றி விடாஅ தவர் க்கு.

Patri Vitaaa Itumpaikal Patrinaip
Patri Vitaaa Thavarkku

Meaning
Those who cling to their attachments and refuse to let go will find that sorrows cling to them in the same way and never let go.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Sorrows will never let go their hold of those who give not up their hold of desire.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who cling to things that cling and eager clasp, Griefs cling to them with unrelaxing grasp.

வலைப்பட்டார் மற்றை யவர்.

Thalaippattaar Theerath Thurandhaar Mayangi
Valaippattaar Matrai Yavar

Meaning
Those who have renounced completely have reached the highest goal. All the rest, bewildered, remain caught in the net of repeated births.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Those who have entirely renounced (all things and all desire) have obtained (absorption into God); all others wander in confusion, entangled in the net of (many) births.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who thoroughly 'renounce' on highest height are set; The rest bewildered, lie entangled in the net.

Kural 349

பற்றற்ற கண்ணே பிறப்பறுக்கும் மற்று
நிலையாமை காணப் படும்.

Patratra Kanne Pirapparukkum Matru
Nilaiyaamai Kaanap Patum

Meaning
The moment attachment is gone, the cycle of birth is cut off. As long as it remains, life keeps showing its unstable, ever-changing nature.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
At the moment in which desire has been abandoned, (other) births will be cut off; when that has not been done, instability will be seen.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
When that which clings falls off, severed is being's tie; All else will then be seen as instability.

Kural 350

பற்றுக பற்றற்றான் பற்றினை அப்பற்றைப்
பற்றுக பற்று விடற்கு.

Patruka Patratraan Patrinai Appatraip
Patruka Patru Vitarku

Meaning
Hold fast to the One who is free of all attachment; cling to that bond alone so that you may let go of every other attachment.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Desire the desire of Him who is without desire; in order to renounce desire, desire that desire.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Cling thou to that which He, to Whom nought clings, hath bid thee cling, Cling to that bond, to get thee free from every clinging thing.
