Kural 481

வேந்தர்க்கு வேண்டும் பொழுது.

Pakalvellum Kookaiyaik Kaakkai Ikalvellum
Vendharkku Ventum Pozhudhu

Meaning
In daylight a crow can defeat an owl, which is stronger but cannot see well then. Likewise, a king who wants to beat his enemies needs the right time on his side.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
A crow will overcome an owl in the day time; so the king who would conquer his enemy must have (a suitable) time.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Explanation in Tamil
ஞாலம் என்பது உலகம். உலகம் முழுவதையும் தன்வசமாக்க ஒருவர் எண்ணினாலும், ஏற்ற காலத்தையும் ஏற்ற இடத்தையும் ஆராய்ந்து செயல்பட்டால் அதுவும் கைகூடும். பெரிய இலக்குகளும் நேரத்தையும் இடத்தையும் சரியாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுப்பதால் நிறைவேறும்.

Meaning
When a strong, driven person holds back, it is like a fighting ram stepping backward so it can charge and strike all the harder.
Explanation in Tamil
ஊக்கமும் ஆற்றலும் உடையவர் சில நேரம் அடங்கி ஒதுங்கி இருப்பது அச்சத்தால் அன்று. சண்டையிடும் ஆட்டுக்கடா (பொருதகர்) எதிரியை வலுவாக முட்டுவதற்காகச் சற்றுப் பின்வாங்குவது போன்றது அது. பின்வாங்குதல் பெரிய பாய்ச்சலுக்கான ஆயத்தமாகவும் இருக்கலாம்.

Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The self-restraint of the energetic (while waiting for a suitable opportunity), is like the drawing back of a fighting-ram in order to butt.

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The wise will not immediately and hastily shew out their anger; they will watch their time, and restrain it within.
