Kural 501

அறம்பொருள் இன்பம் உயிரச்சம் நான்கின்
திறந்தெரிந்து தேறப் படும்.

Aramporul Inpam Uyirachcham Naankin
Thirandherindhu Therap Patum

Meaning
Before trusting someone with responsibility, test how they stand with regard to virtue, wealth, pleasure and fear for their own life. Choose them only after seeing their nature in all four.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let (a minister) be chosen, after he has been tried by means of these four things, viz,-his virtue, (love of) money, (love of) sexual pleasure, and tear of (losing) life.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
How treats he virtue, wealth and pleasure? How, when life's at stake, Comports himself? This four-fold test of man will full assurance make.

Kural 502

நாணுடையான் சுட்டே தெளிவு.

Kutippirandhu Kutraththin Neengi Vatuppariyum
Naanutaiyaan Sutte Thelivu

Meaning
The right choice is someone from a good family, free from faults, and with a sense of shame that dreads the stain of disgrace.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
(The king's) choice should (fall) on him, who is of good family, who is free from faults, and who has the modesty which fears the wounds (of sin).

Kural 503

அரியகற்று ஆசற்றார் கண்ணும் தெரியுங்கால்
இன்மை அரிதே வெளிறு.

Ariyakatru Aasatraar Kannum Theriyungaal
Inmai Aridhe Veliru

Meaning
Even people who have mastered difficult learning and seem free of faults are, when examined closely, rarely found to be entirely without some ignorance.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
When even men, who have studied the most difficult works, and who are free from faults, are (carefully) examined, it is a rare thing to find them without ignorance.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

Kural 504

குணம்நாடிக் குற்றமும் நாடி அவற்றுள்
மிகைநாடி மிக்க கொளல்.

Kunamnaatik Kutramum Naati Avatrul
Mikainaati Mikka Kolal

Meaning
Look into a person's good qualities and look into their faults too, then see which outweighs the other and judge them by what predominates.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let (a king) consider (a man's) good qualities, as well as his faults, and then judge (of his character) by that which prevails.

கருமமே கட்டளைக் கல்.

Perumaikkum Enaich Chirumaikkum Thaththam
Karumame Kattalaik Kal

Meaning
A person's own deeds are the touchstone that shows whether they are great or petty.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
A man's deeds are the touchstone of his greatness and littleness.

Avoid placing trust in people who have no kin or ties; with nothing binding them, they feel no shame at incurring blame.

Trusting people who lack understanding simply because one is fond of them brings every kind of folly and the harm that comes with it.
Classic translations

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Sorrow that will not leave even his posterity will come upon him chooses a stranger whose character he has not known.

Therarka Yaaraiyum Theraadhu Therndhapin
Theruka Therum Porul

Meaning
Trust no one without first examining them; once you have examined them, trust them fully in the matters for which they are fit to be trusted.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Let (a king) choose no one without previous consideration; after he has made his choice, let him unhesitatingly select for each such duties as are appropriate.

Kural 510

தீரா இடும்பை தரும்.

Theraan Thelivum Thelindhaankan Aiyuravum
Theeraa Itumpai Tharum

Meaning
Trusting someone you have not tested, and doubting someone you have tested and come to trust, both lead to sorrow that has no end.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
To make choice of one who has not been examined, and to entertain doubts respecting one who has been chosen, will produce irremediable sorrow.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Trust where you have not tried, doubt of a friend to feel, Once trusted, wounds inflict that nought can heal.
