Paal: Wealth (Porutpaal) Iyal: Royalty Chapter 63: Itukkan Azhiyaamai

Hopefulness in Trouble (Itukkan Azhiyaamai, இடுக்கண் அழியாமை) is chapter 63 of the Thirukkural, in the Royalty section of Porutpaal (பொருட்பால், Wealth). It holds kurals 621 to 630.

Kural 621

இடுக்கண் வருங்கால் நகுக அதனை
அடுத்தூர்வது அஃதொப்ப தில்.

Itukkan Varungaal Nakuka Adhanai
Atuththoorvadhu Aqdhoppa Thil

Meaning
When trouble comes, meet it with a laugh; nothing else confronts and overpowers trouble as well as that.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
If troubles come, laugh; there is nothing like that, to press upon and drive away sorrow.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Smile, with patient, hopeful heart, in troublous hour; Meet and so vanquish grief; nothing hath equal power.

Kural 622

வெள்ளத் தனைய இடும்பை அறிவுடையான்
உள்ளத்தின் உள்ளக் கெடும்.

Vellath Thanaiya Itumpai Arivutaiyaan
Ullaththin Ullak Ketum

Meaning
Even trouble that rushes in like a flood melts away once a wise person calmly turns it over in their mind.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
A flood of troubles will be overcome by the (courageous) thought which the minds of the wise will entertain, even in sorrow.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Though sorrow, like a flood, comes rolling on, When wise men's mind regards it,- it is gone.

Kural 623

இடும்பைக்கு இடும்பை படுப்பர் இடும்பைக்கு
இடும்பை படாஅ தவர்.

Itumpaikku Itumpai Patuppar Itumpaikku
Itumpai Pataaa Thavar

Meaning
Those who refuse to be distressed by distress end up distressing the distress itself; trouble loses its hold over them.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
They give sorrow to sorrow, who in sorrow do not suffer sorrow.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who griefs confront with meek, ungrieving heart, From them griefs, put to grief, depart.

Kural 624

இடுக்கண் இடர்ப்பாடு உடைத்து.

Matuththavaa Yellaam Pakatannaan Utra
Itukkan Itarppaatu Utaiththu

Meaning
A person who, like a sturdy ox hauling a cart through every rough patch, keeps pushing on wherever the way is blocked makes the troubles that strike him suffer instead.

Atukki Varinum Azhivilaan Utra
Itukkan Itukkat Patum

Meaning
Even when troubles pile up one upon another, the person who does not break down under them makes those very troubles suffer and give way.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The troubles of that man will be troubled (and disappear) who, however thickly they may come upon him, does not abandon (his purpose).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
When griefs press on, but fail to crush the patient heart, Then griefs defeated, put to grief, depart.

Atremendru Allar Patupavo Petremendru
Ompudhal Thetraa Thavar

Meaning
Those who never clung to their wealth, gloating "we have gained it", will hardly wail "we have lost everything" when it goes.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Will those men ever cry out in sorrow, "we are destitute" who, (in their prosperity), give not way to (undue desire) to keep their wealth.

Kaiyaaraak Kollaadhaam Mel

Meaning
Knowing that the body is simply a target for suffering, the noble do not let the turmoil of trouble sink them into helpless grief.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The great will not regard trouble as trouble, knowing that the body is the butt of trouble.
