Ennaimun Nillanmin Thevvir Palarennai
Munnindru Kalnin Ravar

Meaning
A soldier warns the enemy: do not stand up against my leader, for many who once faced him in battle now stand only as memorial stones.

O my foes, stand not before my leader; (for) many are those who did so but afterwards stood (in the shape of) statues.

Kural 772

கான முயலெய்த அம்பினில் யானை
பிழைத்தவேல் ஏந்தல் இனிது.

Kaana Muyaleydha Ampinil Yaanai
Pizhaiththavel Endhal Inidhu

Meaning
It is more satisfying to carry a spear that missed an elephant than an arrow that killed a forest hare. Aiming at something great, even in failure, is nobler than succeeding at something petty.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
It is more pleasant to hold the dart that has missed an elephant than that which has hit hare in the forest.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Who aims at elephant, though dart should fail, has greater praise Than he who woodland hare with winged arrow slays.

Kural 773

பேராண்மை என்ப தறுகண்ஒன் றுற்றக்கால்
ஊராண்மை மற்றதன் எஃகு.

Peraanmai Enpa Tharukanon Rutrakkaal
Ooraanmai Matradhan Eqku

Meaning
Fearless fierceness in battle is called great valour, but its sharpest edge is generosity: helping even an enemy who has fallen into trouble.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The learned say that fierceness (incontest with a foe) is indeed great valour; but to become a benefactor in case of accident (to a foe) is the extreme (limit) of that valour.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Fierceness in hour of strife heroic greatness shows; Its edge is kindness to our suffering foes.

Kural 774

மெய்வேல் பறியா நகும்.

Kaivel Kalitrotu Pokki Varupavan
Meyvel Pariyaa Nakum

Meaning
Having hurled his spear at an elephant and looking for another weapon, the warrior finds a spear lodged in his own body, pulls it out, and laughs.

Vizhiththakan Velkona Teriya Azhiththimaippin
Ottandro Vanka Navarkku

Meaning
If a brave warrior's fiercely staring eyes so much as blink when a spear is thrown at him, is that not as good as retreat for such a man?

Vizhuppun Pataadhanaal Ellaam Vazhukkinul
Vaikkumdhan Naalai Etuththu

Meaning
When a warrior counts up his days, he sets aside as wasted every day on which he did not receive an honourable wound in battle.
