Classic translations

Friendship with good people keeps growing, like the crescent moon filling out to full; friendship with foolish people shrinks over time, like the moon waning after it is full.

Mersenaru Itiththar Poruttu

Meaning
We make friends not just to laugh together, but so that when one of us goes too far, the other steps in first and firmly sets him right.

Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)

Inaiyar Ivaremakku Innamyaam Endru
Punaiyinum Pullennum Natpu

Meaning
When friends boast, "He means this much to us, and we mean that much to him," the friendship, however dressed up in words, only looks shabby.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Though friends may praise one another saying, "He is so intimate with us, and we so much (with him)"; (still) such friendship will appear mean.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Mean is the friendship that men blazon forth,' He's thus to me' and 'such to him my worth'.
