Kural 971

ஒளிஒருவற்கு உள்ள வெறுக்கை இளிஒருவற்கு
அஃதிறந்து வாழ்தும் எனல்.

Olioruvarku Ulla Verukkai Ilioruvarku
Aqdhirandhu Vaazhdhum Enal

Meaning
A person's true shine is the abundance of drive and spirit within; disgrace is the attitude that says, "We can live well enough without it."
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
One's light is the abundance of one's courage; one's darkness is the desire to live destitute of such (a state of mind.).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The light of life is mental energy; disgrace is his Who says, 'I 'ill lead a happy life devoid of this.'.

Kural 972

செய்தொழில் வேற்றுமை யான்.

Pirappokkum Ellaa Uyirkkum Sirappovvaa
Seydhozhil Vetrumai Yaan

Meaning
All living beings are alike in being born; what makes them differ in worth is the difference in the work and deeds they carry out.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
All human beings agree as regards their birth but differ as regards their characteristics, because of the different qualities of their actions.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
All men that live are one in circumstances of birth; Diversities of works give each his special worth.

Kural 973

மேலிருந்தும் மேலல்லார் மேலல்லர் கீழிருந்தும்
கீழல்லார் கீழல் லவர்.

Melirundhum Melallaar Melallar Keezhirundhum
Keezhallaar Keezhal Lavar

Meaning
Those who sit in high places but lack nobility are not truly high; those in low places who are not mean at heart are not truly low.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Though (raised) above, the base cannot become great; though (brought) low, the great cannot become base.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The men of lofty line, whose souls are mean, are never great The men of lowly birth, when high of soul, are not of low estate.

Thannaiththaan Kontozhukin Untu

Meaning
Like women steadfast in their faithfulness, greatness too lasts only as long as a person guards themselves and stays true in conduct.

Exists while to itself is true.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Like single-hearted women, greatness too, Exists while to itself is true.

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
(Though reduced) the great will be able to perform, in the proper way, deeds difficult (for others to do).
Translation (G.U. Pope)
The man endowed with greatness true, Rare deeds in perfect wise will do.

சிறியார் உணர்ச்சியுள் இல்லை பெரியாரைப்
பேணிக் கொள் வேம் என்னும் நோக்கு.

Siriyaar Unarchchiyul Illai Periyaaraip
Penikkol Vemennum Nokku

Meaning
The thought "Let us honour the great and win them over as our own" simply never arises in the minds of small-minded people.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
It is never in the nature of the base to seek the society of the great and partake of their nature.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
' As votaries of the truly great we will ourselves enroll,' Is thought that enters not the mind of men of little soul.

Meaning
When distinction, such as wealth or rank, falls to unworthy people, it only turns into arrogant, overbearing behaviour that goes beyond all limits.
Explanation in Tamil
செல்வம், பதவி, கல்வி போன்ற சிறப்புகள் தகுதியும் நல்ல பண்பும் இல்லாதவர்களிடம் சேர்ந்தால், அவை எல்லை மீறிய செருக்கான செயல்களாகவே வெளிப்படும். நல்லவர் கையில் நன்மை தரும் சிறப்பு, தகாதவர் கையில் அளவுகடந்த ஆணவமாக மாறிவிடும்.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Even nobility of birth, wealth and learning, if in (the possession of) the base, will (only) produce everincreasing pride.

Paniyumaam Endrum Perumai Sirumai
Aniyumaam Thannai Viyandhu

Meaning
Greatness always bows in humility, while smallness decks itself out in admiration of its own self.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The great will always humble himself; but the mean will exalt himself in self-admiration.

பெருமிதம் ஊர்ந்து விடல்.

Greatness is being free of conceit; smallness is riding high on conceit and letting it carry you along.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
Freedom from conceit is (the nature of true) greatness; (while) obstinacy therein is (that of) meanness.
Translation (G.U. Pope)

குற்றமே கூறி விடும்.

Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
The great hide the faults of others; the base only divulge them.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
Greatness will hide a neighbour's shame; Meanness his faults to all the world proclaim.
