- காதலால் துன்புற்று வருந்தும் ஒருவனுக்குப் பாதுகாப்பாகவும் வலிமையாகவும் இருப்பது மடல் ஏறுதல் ஒன்றே என்று தலைவன் கூறுகிறான். மடல் ஏறுதல் என்பது, பனைமடலால் செய்த குதிரையில் அமர்ந்து, காதலியின் உருவம் வரைந்த படத்தைக் கையில் ஏந்தி, ஊர்த்தெருவில் தன் காதலை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பழைய வழக்கம். காதல் நிறைவேறாதபோது இதையே இறுதி வழியாக அவன் நினைக்கிறான்.
