- Refusing to kill a creature and eat it is better than performing a thousand fire sacrifices with offerings of ghee poured into the flames.

- "அவி" என்பது வேள்வித் தீயில் ஊற்றப்படும் நெய் முதலிய பொருள்கள். அத்தகைய பொருள்களைச் சொரிந்து ஆயிரம் வேள்விகள் செய்வதைவிட, ஓர் உயிரைக் கொன்று அதன் இறைச்சியை உண்ணாமல் இருப்பதே மேலானது என்று வள்ளுவர் கூறுகிறார். பெரிய சடங்குகளைவிட, ஓர் உயிருக்குத் தீங்கு செய்யாத எளிய நடத்தையே உயர்ந்த அறம் என்பது இதன் கருத்து.
