Thirukkural 542: வானோக்கி வாழும் உலகெல்லாம் மன்னவன் – Meaning in English (The Right Sceptre)

Kural 542

Vaanokki Vaazhum Ulakellaam Mannavan
Kol Nokki Vaazhung Kuti

Meaning
Just as every living thing depends on the sky for rain, the people of a land depend on the ruler's just governance for their life and wellbeing.
Classic translations
Meaning (W.H. Drew & John Lazarus)
When there is rain, the living creation thrives; and so when the king rules justly, his subjects thrive.
Translation (G.U. Pope)
All earth looks up to heav'n whence raindrops fall; All subjects look to king that ruleth all.
