- உயரம், அகலம், உறுதி, பகைவர் எளிதில் அணுக முடியாத தன்மை ஆகிய நான்கும் அமைந்த மதிலே அரண் என்று நூல்கள் கூறுகின்றன. பகைவர் ஏற முடியாத உயரமும், உடைக்க முடியாத அகலமும் வலிமையும், நெருங்க முடியாத அமைப்பும் இருந்தால்தான் அது உண்மையான காவலாக நிற்கும்.
