Porutham for all 27 stars

What the 10 poruthams check

Thirumana porutham compares the birth stars (natchathiram) and moon signs (rasi) of the bride and groom. Each of the ten poruthams looks at one part of married life:

PoruthamWhat it is about
DinaHealth and day-to-day harmony
GanaTemperament — Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa
MahendraChildren and prosperity
Stree DeerghamA long, prosperous married life
YoniPhysical compatibility, by each star’s animal
RasiFamily growth and harmony, by the moon signs
Rasi AdhipathiFriendship between the lords of the two rasis
VasyaMutual attraction
RajjuThe husband’s long life — the most important
VedhaiFreedom from stars that afflict each other

How to use the checker

  1. Choose the bride’s star, then the groom’s star.
  2. If either star falls in two rasis, choose the rasi from the horoscope.
  3. Every porutham is shown as agrees, partly or does not agree, with the rule that decides it.

Each result is scored out of 10 (a partial porutham counts as half). A match with Rajju or Vedhai missing is shown as not recommended, as in most Tamil almanacs, whatever the score.

You can also open the page for any star to see all 27 stars ranked against it, or a page for any bride–groom star pair with every porutham explained.

Frequently asked questions

How many poruthams are needed for marriage?
There is no single rule, but most Tamil families look for at least 6 of the 10 poruthams, and treat Rajju as essential — a match without Rajju porutham is usually not taken forward however many others agree. Dina, Gana, Yoni, Rasi and Rajju are generally considered the most important five.
What is Rajju porutham and why is it the most important?
The 27 stars are grouped into five rajjus — Siro (head), Kanta (neck), Udara (navel), Ooru (thigh) and Pada (feet). If the bride and groom are born in stars of the same rajju, Rajju porutham does not agree. Tradition links it to the husband’s long life, which is why it is treated as the one porutham that cannot be missing.
My star is in two rasis. Which one should I choose?
Nine stars — Karthigai, Mirugasheersham, Punarpoosam, Uthiram, Chithirai, Visakam, Uthiradam, Avittam and Poorattathi — are split between two rasis depending on the padam (quarter) you were born in. Your horoscope (jathagam) shows your rasi; choose that one. Only Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi and Vasya porutham depend on it.
Is the bride's star counted first?
Yes. In Tamil porutham the count always starts from the bride’s star (and rasi) and goes to the groom’s, counting the bride’s own star as 1. That is why swapping the bride and groom can give a different result.
Is star matching the same as full jathagam porutham?
No. Natchathira porutham (star matching) is the first check most families do. A full horoscope match by an astrologer also looks at the planets in both charts — for example Chevvai dosham and the dasa periods — which needs the full birth details.
Why do different websites or almanacs give different answers?
Almanacs differ slightly on a few rules — for example which counts are acceptable for Rasi and Stree Deergham porutham, or how a Manushya bride and Deva groom are scored for Gana. This checker uses the most widely published rules and shows the rule next to every result, so you can see exactly why it agrees or not.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The checker runs entirely in your browser; nothing you choose is sent to a server. Your choice is kept only in the page address, so you can share or bookmark the result.
