Biography

A.R. Rahman, born Allah Rakha Rahman (formerly A.S. Dileep Kumar) on January 6, 1967, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the world’s most celebrated music composers. Often referred to as the “Mozart of Madras” and “Isai Puyal” (Musical Storm), he has revolutionized Indian film music with his unique blend of Eastern classical music, electronic sounds, and Western orchestral arrangements.

Rahman’s career breakthrough came with Mani Ratnam’s “Roja” (1992), for which he won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in his very first film. He went on to compose iconic scores for “Bombay” (1995), “Dil Se” (1998), “Lagaan” (2001), “Rang De Basanti” (2006), and “Guru” (2007). His compositions for Tamil cinema include timeless albums like “Kadhalan” (1994), “Indian” (1996), “Mudhalvan” (1999), and “Enthiran” (2010).

Rahman achieved global fame by winning two Academy Awards for “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) — Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“Jai Ho”). His accolades include two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, six National Film Awards, and numerous Filmfare Awards. In 2010, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.
