Biography

Abbas, born Abbas Ali on June 29, 1975, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a popular Indian actor who was one of the leading romantic heroes in Tamil cinema during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Known for his handsome looks and gentlemanly screen presence, he was a favourite for romantic roles in that era.

Abbas made his acting debut in the multi-starrer “Kadhal Desam” (1996) alongside Vineeth and Tabu, directed by Kathir, which became a massive hit. He followed this with iconic films like “Minsara Kanavu” (1997) directed by Rajiv Menon with music by A.R. Rahman, and “Jeans” (1998) opposite Aishwarya Rai, also with an A.R. Rahman soundtrack. His role in Rajinikanth’s “Padayappa” (1999) further cemented his popularity.

Abbas went on to appear in films like “Kadhalar Dhinam” (1999), “Piriyadha Varam Vendum” (2001), and “Ullam Ketkumae” (2005). He is also a trained classical dancer and has performed at cultural events. While he gradually moved to character roles and reduced his film appearances, Abbas remains fondly remembered as one of the charming romantic leads of Tamil cinema’s golden 1990s era. He has also appeared in Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi films.
