Biography
K.S. Chithra, born Krishnan Nair Shantakumari Chithra on July 27, 1963, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is one of India’s most legendary and decorated playback singers. With over 25,000 songs recorded in more than a dozen Indian languages including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Bengali, she is one of the most prolific singers in Indian cinema history.
Chithra began her singing career at a young age, trained in Carnatic music by Dr. K. Omanakutty. She made her playback debut in the Malayalam film “Attahasam” (1983) and quickly became the most sought-after female voice in South Indian cinema. Her Tamil songs are beloved across generations — iconic tracks include “Vennila Aadai Clipping” from “Minsara Kanavu” (1997), “Snehithane” from “Alaipayuthey” (2000), “Narumugaye” from “Iruvar” (1997), and “Roja Kaadhal” from “Roja” (1992).
Chithra has won six National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, a record for any Indian singer. She has also received the Padma Shri (2005) and the Padma Bhushan (2021) from the Government of India, multiple Filmfare Awards, and countless state film awards across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Her voice is synonymous with melody and emotional depth in Indian film music.
