Biography
Immanuel Vasanth Dinakaran, professionally known as D. Imman, was born on January 24, 1983, and is one of Tamil cinema’s most prolific and beloved music composers and singers. He began his musical journey at just 15 years of age, apprenticing under composers Mahesh Mahadevan and Adithyan as a keyboard player.
Imman made his debut as an independent music director with “Thamizhan” (2002) and has since composed music for over 100 films. He built a reputation for creating catchy, mass-appeal songs infused with folk and rural flavours that resonate deeply with Tamil audiences. His notable collaborations with director Prabhu Solomon in “Kumki” (2012) and “Kayal” (2014) produced some of Tamil cinema’s most memorable melodies.
His career reached new heights with the blockbuster “Viswasam” (2019), starring Ajith Kumar and Nayanthara, whose songs became chartbusters. Other acclaimed soundtracks include “Mynaa” (2010), “Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru” (2013), and “Vedalam” (2015). He became the fifth Tamil music composer to win the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, a landmark achievement in his career.
Imman has also won a Tamil Nadu State Film Award, two Vijay Awards, and an Edison Award. In 2019, he was appointed Ambassador for the Tamil Chair at the University of Toronto, Canada. The Government of Tamil Nadu honoured him with the Kalaimamani award in 2021. Known for his energetic live concerts and devotional music, D. Imman continues to be one of the most sought-after composers in the Tamil film industry.
