Biography
Ganesh Iyer, popularly known as Delhi Ganesh, born on August 1, 1944, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, is a legendary Tamil character actor who has been an integral part of Tamil cinema for over five decades. He earned the prefix “Delhi” due to his early theatre career in Delhi before moving to the Tamil film industry.
Delhi Ganesh made his film debut in the 1970s and went on to appear in over 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages. His ability to portray a wide range of characters - from devoted fathers and loyal friends to cunning villains and comedy sidekicks - made him one of the most versatile character actors in Indian cinema.
His memorable performances span Tamil cinema’s golden eras, including roles in “Mullum Malarum” (1978), “Varumayin Niram Sivappu” (1980), “Thalapathi” (1991), “Indian” (1996), “Mudhalvan” (1999), and “Enthiran” (2010). He was equally comfortable in K. Balachander’s urban dramas, Mani Ratnam’s intense narratives, and S. Shankar’s mass entertainers.
Delhi Ganesh won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Character Actor and has received lifetime achievement recognition from various film bodies. He passed away on November 30, 2024, in Chennai. Known for his dignified screen presence, impeccable dialogue delivery, and remarkable consistency across five decades, Delhi Ganesh remains one of Tamil cinema’s most treasured character actors.
