Goundamani, born Subramaniyan Karuppaiya on May 25, 1939, in Karuvelanpatti near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is a legendary Tamil film comedian and actor who has appeared in over 500 films. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians in the history of Tamil cinema and is celebrated for his impeccable comic timing, witty one-liners, and natural performance style.

Goundamani began his career as a stage comedian performing in rural Tamil Nadu before making his film debut in “Ithikkara Pakki” (1980). He became a household name through his iconic comedy partnership with Senthil, forming one of Tamil cinema’s most beloved comedy duos. Together, they delivered unforgettable comedy sequences in films like “Karakattakaran” (1989), “Gentleman” (1993), “Indian” (1996), “Baashha” (1995), “Avvai Shanmugi” (1996), and “Padayappa” (1999).

His solo comedy performances in films like “Thevar Magan” (1992) and his timing with superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have become part of Tamil pop culture. Goundamani has won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian multiple times and received the Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu. His dialogues and comedic expressions continue to be widely shared and referenced across social media, making him an enduring cultural icon.
