Biography
G. V. Prakash Kumar (popularly known as GV Prakash) is an Indian music composer, playback singer, actor and producer who works predominantly in Tamil cinema. Born as Gangadharan Venkatesh Prakash Kumar on 13 June 1987 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he entered the film world early through singing and studio exposure, gradually building a reputation for contemporary melodies and energetic background scores. Over the years, he has become one of the most recognisable names of his generation, balancing work across film music, on-screen roles and production.
Prakash’s breakthrough as a full-fledged composer came with the Tamil film Veyil (2006), which is widely cited as his debut as a music director. He quickly followed it up with prominent projects that expanded his range, including Aayirathil Oruvan (2009) and the critically acclaimed Aadukalam (2011). In the 2010s, his filmography continued to grow with popular soundtracks and scores for mainstream hits such as Raja Rani (2013) and Theri (2016), reinforcing his standing as a composer capable of both chart-friendly songs and strong cinematic scoring.
In addition to music, GV Prakash expanded into acting with his debut as a lead actor in Darling (2015). From there, he developed a parallel acting career while continuing to compose, a combination that has made him a unique multi-hyphenate in Tamil cinema. His work has also extended into production, reflecting a broader involvement in the filmmaking process beyond composing and performing.
Awards and recognition have been a major part of his career narrative. He won the Filmfare Award South for Best Music Director – Tamil for Aadukalam (2011). On the national stage, he received National Film Award recognition for his music, including a Best Music Director honour associated with Soorarai Pottru (2020), and later the National Film Award for Best Music Director (Songs) for Vaathi at the 71st National Film Awards (for 2023), underlining his continued relevance across changing musical trends.
In recent years, GV Prakash has remained busy with both acting and composing commitments. Notably, Happy Raj (filming reported wrapped in early 2026) has been in the news cycle, while Vekkai (announced in 2026) positions him as both lead actor and composer, co-starring Sreenath Bhasi and backed by Neelam Productions among others. He has also been associated with ongoing promotions and announcements around projects such as Magudam and the film Youth (2026), keeping him active as a sought-after music director while continuing to expand his on-screen slate.
