Biography
Hariharan, born on April 3, 1955, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is one of India’s most acclaimed playback singers and ghazal artists. He has recorded songs in multiple languages including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Marathi, and is renowned for his versatile vocal range and soulful singing style.
Hariharan trained in both Carnatic and Hindustani classical music and began his playback singing career in the 1980s. He gained immense popularity through his collaborations with A.R. Rahman, delivering iconic Tamil film songs that became generation-defining hits. His notable Tamil songs include “Telephone Manipol” from “Kadhalan” (1994), “Uyire” from “Bombay” (1995), “Narumugaye” from “Iruvar” (1997), and “Tu Hi Re” from “Bombay”.
Beyond films, Hariharan is a celebrated ghazal singer, with albums like “Gulfam” and “Kaash” earning critical acclaim. He formed the fusion music duo “Colonial Cousins” with Lesle Lewis, blending Indian and Western music. He has won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer twice, the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer, and numerous other accolades.
