Biography

Dr. Jeppiaar (11 June 1931 – 18 June 2016), commonly known as J.P.R., was a prominent Indian politician, educationist, industrialist, and film producer from Tamil Nadu. Born in Muttom near Nagercoil in the former Travancore Cochin Presidency (present-day Kanyakumari District), he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential figures in Tamil Nadu’s education and entertainment landscape.

Jeppiaar began his career in the Tamil film industry as a producer in 1980 with “Vasantha Azhaippugal”, a drama directed by T. Rajendar. He went on to produce several films including “Pani Malar” (1982) and “Unnai Vida Maatten” (1985). In 1991, he expanded into directing and acting with “Nallathai Naadu Kekum”, a film he produced, directed, and starred in, incorporating archival footage of the late Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran to evoke themes of political legacy and social justice.

A former member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and a loyal AIADMK member, Jeppiaar was known to be a close confidante of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). Beyond politics and cinema, he made his most lasting impact as an educationist. He was the founder and chairman of the Jeppiaar Educational Trust and the founder and chancellor of Sathyabama University. He is widely regarded as one of the pioneers in the privatisation of engineering education in Tamil Nadu, naming his Panimalar group of educational institutions after his mother.

Jeppiaar also established industrial ventures spanning cement, steel, dairy products, purified water, salt production, a bakery, and a hospital. He held a Bachelor of Law from Madras University and a PhD from Anna University. Jeppiaar passed away on 18 June 2016 in Chennai at the age of 85. A memorial museum was inaugurated at Jeppiaar Engineering College in his honour on 17 June 2017.
