Biography

Ken Karunas (born April 18, 2001) is an Indian actor, director, writer, and musician who works predominantly in the Tamil film industry. He is the son of popular Tamil comedian and politician Karunas and playback singer Grace Karunas.

Early Life and Family

Ken was born into a cinema family in Tamil Nadu. His father Karunas is one of Tamil cinema’s most beloved comedians, known for his roles in over 100 films, while his mother Grace Karunas is an accomplished playback singer. His elder sister Diana Karunas is a doctor. Growing up surrounded by the film industry, Ken developed a natural affinity for cinema from a young age.

Acting Career

Child Artist Debut

Ken made his acting debut as a child artist in Ragalaipuram (2013), a film co-produced by his father. He followed this with a role as a hotel assistant in Nedunchaalai (2014) and appeared in Azhagu Kutti Chellam (2016).

Breakthrough in Asuran (2019)

Ken’s breakthrough came with Vetrimaaran’s critically acclaimed Asuran (2019), where he portrayed Chidambaram, the impulsive and emotionally intense teenage son of Dhanush’s character Sivasamy. Set in the 1980s, the film follows a family navigating caste violence, and Ken’s performance as the hot-headed younger son who triggers a chain of devastating events was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. The role established him as a serious talent in Tamil cinema.

Viduthalai Part 2 (2024)

Ken continued his collaboration with director Vetrimaaran by playing Karuppan in Viduthalai Part 2 (2024), reuniting with the ensemble cast that included Vijay Sethupathi, Manju Warrier, and Soori.

Behind the Camera

Ken gained valuable filmmaking experience by working as an assistant director to Dhanush on several projects including Vaathi (2023), Thiruchitrambalam (2022), and Raayan (2024). This mentorship under one of Tamil cinema’s leading actors helped shape his understanding of storytelling and filmmaking craft.

Directorial Debut: Youth (2026)

In 2026, Ken took a major leap by writing, directing, and starring in Youth, a coming-of-age drama. In the film, he plays Praveen, a 15-year-old boy navigating adolescence, school life, friendships, and first love. The film features music by G.V. Prakash Kumar and a cast including Anishma Anilkumar, Devadarshini, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Priyanshi Yadav, and Meenakshi Dinesh. The film’s pre-release event saw support from both Dhanush and Vetrimaaran, with Silambarasan TR unveiling the trailer. Youth is scheduled for theatrical release on March 19, 2026.
