Kovai Sarala, born Sarala on April 7, 1962, in Coimbatore (Kovai), Tamil Nadu, is one of the most popular and prolific female comedians in Indian cinema. With over 750 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, she is one of the most recognizable character actresses in South Indian cinema.
Kovai Sarala began her career in the early 1980s and quickly became known for her boisterous comedy style, loud expressions, and unique screen persona. She has been an integral part of some of Tamil cinema’s biggest blockbusters, delivering memorable comedy tracks alongside top stars. Her collaborations with Goundamani, Senthil, and Vadivelu resulted in some of the most hilarious sequences in Tamil cinema.
Her notable film appearances include “Gentleman” (1993), “Indian” (1996), “Padayappa” (1999), “Anbe Sivam” (2003), “Chandramukhi” (2005), and the “Aranmanai” franchise. In Telugu cinema, she has been equally popular, appearing in films like “Jalsa” (2008) and numerous other hits. Kovai Sarala has won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian, the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress - Telugu, and the Nandi Award.
