Biography

Ranganathan Madhavan, born on June 1, 1970, in Jamshedpur, Bihar (now Jharkhand), is an Indian actor, screenwriter, director, and producer who has made a lasting mark in both Tamil and Hindi cinema. Born to a Tamil Brahmin family — his father Ranganathan worked as a management executive at Tata Steel and his mother Saroja managed a Bank of India branch — Madhavan grew up with a cosmopolitan upbringing that included a year in Alberta, Canada, as a Rotary International cultural ambassador.

After earning a BSc in Electronics, Madhavan began his career in Hindi television serials including “Banegi Apni Baat” and “Sea Hawks” before getting his breakthrough in Tamil cinema. Mani Ratnam’s romantic drama “Alaipayuthey” (2000) made him an overnight sensation, and he followed it with the beloved “Minnale” (2001), directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Major commercial hits like “Run” (2002) and critically acclaimed films like “Kannathil Muthamittal” (2002), “Anbe Sivam” (2003), and “Aayutha Ezhuthu” (2004) established him as one of Tamil cinema’s most versatile leading men.

Madhavan achieved pan-Indian superstardom with “3 Idiots” (2009) alongside Aamir Khan, one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. He made his directorial debut with “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect” (2022), in which he also starred as ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. The film was India’s official selection for the 95th Academy Awards.

He has won a National Film Award, five Filmfare Awards South, and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. He was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2026. Since September 2023, he serves as President of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
