Biography
Manivannan, born on July 31, 1954, in Sulur, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, was a prolific Indian film director, actor, screenwriter, and dialogue writer who made significant contributions to Tamil cinema. He was one of the most respected filmmakers known for his socially relevant and politically charged narratives.
Manivannan began his career as a writer before making his directorial debut with “Gopurangal Saivathillai” (1986), which dealt with the controversial anti-Hindi agitation in Tamil Nadu. He went on to direct over 50 films, many of which addressed social issues, caste politics, and the lives of common people. His notable directorial works include “Porkkaalam” (1997), “Maaman Magal” (1995), and “Thenpandi Seemayile” (1998).
As an actor, Manivannan appeared in over 400 films, showcasing remarkable versatility. He was memorable in films like “Mounam Pesiyadhe” (2002), “Parthiban Kanavu” (2003), “Anbe Sivam” (2003), and “Subramaniapuram” (2008). His ability to seamlessly transition between comedy, drama, and villainy made him one of Tamil cinema’s most dependable character actors. Manivannan passed away on June 15, 2013, in Chennai due to cardiac arrest at the age of 58, leaving behind a rich legacy of socially conscious cinema and memorable performances.
