Biography

Manorama, born Gopishantha on May 26, 1937, in Mannargudi, Tamil Nadu, was one of Indian cinema’s most legendary actresses and comedians. Known affectionately as “Aachi”, she holds the Guinness World Record for acting in the most films by any actress, with over 1,500 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi languages spanning nearly six decades.

Manorama began her career as a stage actress and singer before making her film debut in “Malayitta Mangai” (1958). She initially played lead roles before transitioning to comedy and character roles, where she truly found her calling. Her impeccable comic timing, expressive face, and ability to deliver both comedy and drama made her indispensable to Tamil cinema. She starred alongside every major Tamil actor from Sivaji Ganesan and MGR to Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.

Her iconic roles in films like “Pattikada Pattanama” (1972), “Avvai Shanmugi” (1996), “Indian” (1996), and “Mozhi” (2007) remain etched in the hearts of Tamil audiences. Manorama won two National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actress, four Filmfare Awards, the Padma Shri (2002), and numerous state film awards. She passed away on October 10, 2015, in Chennai at the age of 78, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy as one of the greatest character actors in world cinema.
