Prabhu Ganesan, known professionally as Prabhu, is an Indian film actor and producer who became one of Tamil cinema’s most familiar leading men from the 1980s through the 1990s, later transitioning into widely seen supporting and character roles. Born on 27 December 1956 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he is the son of legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan. Before stepping in front of the camera, Prabhu gained early industry exposure on the production side, working as an executive producer and learning the craft under his uncle and mentor V. C. Shanmugam. He also observed filmmaking closely through Sivaji Productions, including work connected to films such as “Thirisoolam”, which helped shape his understanding of mainstream Tamil cinema.

Prabhu made his acting debut with “Sangili” (1982) and quickly found commercial traction in the same period with “Kozhi Koovuthu” (1982). As the decade progressed, he became a prominent hero and earned the popular moniker “Ilaya Thilagam.” His filmography from the late 1980s includes notable titles such as Mani Ratnam’s “Agni Natchathiram” (1988) and “Vetri Vizha” (1989), reflecting his presence in the era’s big-ticket, star-driven entertainers. Over a career spanning decades, he has been credited with 220+ films across languages, underscoring both his longevity and adaptability.

Among Prabhu’s most celebrated performances is “Chinna Thambi” (1991), a major career milestone that brought him significant acclaim and state-level recognition. He also received the Cinema Express Award for Best Actor (Tamil) for “Manasukkul Mathappu” (1988), and later earned a Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Award/Special Prize for Best Actor for “Charlie Chaplin” (2002). In the 2000s and beyond, he remained a steady presence in mainstream cinema, appearing in high-profile projects such as “Ayan” (2009) and “Theri” (2016), where his supporting roles added weight to large-scale commercial narratives.

In recent years, Prabhu has continued acting consistently, with 2025 reports noting appearances in films including “Nesippaya”, “Good Bad Ugly”, “Rajaputhiran”, and “Kiss”. He has also been reported to have a pivotal role in “Marshal” (Karthi’s film), with updates indicating he would begin filming his portions in October 2025. In mid-2026, his family and team publicly dismissed health-related rumors, stating that he was hale and healthy—reinforcing that the veteran actor remains active and engaged with ongoing work in Tamil cinema.
