Biography
Balaji Patturaj, popularly known as RJ Balaji (and often searched as “R Balaji”), is an Indian actor, director and radio jockey from Chennai. Born on 20 June 1985 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he first became a household name through FM radio after being selected as an RJ in November 2006. His prank-call and comedy segment “Cross Talk” on BIG FM 92.7 earned him mass recognition, establishing a distinctive, relatable humour style that later translated effectively to the big screen.
RJ Balaji entered Tamil cinema with early appearances around 2013, including roles in Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru (2013) and other initial credits such as Puthagam (2013), with a cameo mention in Ethir Neechal (2013) in popular film databases. He soon became a familiar supporting performer in mainstream entertainers, gaining strong visibility with Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015). Across this phase, he built a reputation for scene-stealing comedy and grounded supporting parts, appearing in films such as Vadacurry (2014) and Pugazh (2016), and expanding into more varied ensembles including Kaatru Veliyidai (2017).
A major turning point came when he transitioned to a lead-hero space with the political satire LKG (2019), where his humour-driven persona was used to anchor a full narrative. He followed it up with another high-profile lead in Mookuthi Amman (2020), further consolidating his box-office profile. In Veetla Vishesham (2022), he not only played the lead but also took on direction duties as a co-director, signalling a decisive move toward filmmaking and storytelling control.
In awards and recognition, RJ Balaji received the SIIMA Award – Best Comedian for Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, a milestone often cited as a key industry acknowledgement of his comic timing and popularity. Beyond awards, his career is frequently noted for successfully bridging mass radio fame with mainstream cinema, while maintaining an accessible, contemporary brand of humour.
In the mid-2020s, his work increasingly leaned into direction at a larger scale. By major biography listings and recent coverage, Karuppu (2026) is positioned as his solo director venture and a significant project in his filmography. The film has also kept him in the news cycle through interviews about his intent to make a “proper mainstream Tamil film,” as well as public discussions around production updates and team statements—marking a new phase where RJ Balaji’s identity is as strongly associated with direction as it is with acting.
